#1 Ser 1 crown wheel & pinion

Post by CHASLON » Fri Jun 10, 2016 1:25 pm

Please help - my 1965 ser 1 4.2 (chassis 1184) power-lok differential has failed. The surfaces of the pinion teeth are breaking up.
The ratio is 3.07 (43 X 14). It would seem that new replacement crown wheel pinion sets are not available.
I have been offered a 3.07 non power-lok Crown wheel and pinion - said to be from a ser 1 E (did they make one?) discarded some yrs ago from a ser1 and replaced by a power-lok version.
I have also been offered a complete 3.07 non power-lok diff assembly from an XJS.
So where do I go from here?
Does anyone know where I can obtain a 3.07 powerlok Crown wheel pinion set?
Should I fit the complete XJS diff assembly into my rear end cage?
Is the non power-lok crown /pin set likely to fit my diff housing?
Can a non power-lok crown wheel be adapted to take my healthy power-lok unit?
Any comments, suggestions or sources of parts would be most welcome.
Thenks Rick

The Dana 44 ring and pinion fit the Salisbury third member with some very minor bearing and bolt changes. The limited slip interfaces with these units, so I would expect it would also be the case with the Jaguar parts....but cannot say for sure. The Dana 44 was common in older Jeep and International Harvester "Scout" vehicles. The Dana 3.07 gear conversion is the norm in the U.S. as the supply of Jaguar 3.07 gears has virtually dried up.

We have had a number of original type 3.07 CWPs made. PM me if interested.

The ring and pinion of a given ratio doesn't care whether the carrier is open or LSD - it will fit both. There are three sizes for the extremes of ratio but as a like-for-like swap that isn't an issue

All XJS cars(V12 or 6 cyl) had LSD

The XJS diff would need the wishbone fulcrum brackets changed to your E-type style before fitting in your cage.

I'd take the line of least resistance and fit the 3.07 ring and pinion you've been offered, as the old one has to come off anyway. Obviously you'd need to rebuild the whole thing if there have been pieces floating around, and therefore shim everything from scratch.

Many thanks for your quick responses, providing leads for new CWP sets. It has also only just dawned on me that a crown wheel is not a wheel but a ring gear bolted to an open or to a P.Lok diff assembly and hence interchangeable. Hopefully, I now have a clear way forward. Cheers Rick.
