#1 Tightening the upper timing chain

Post by jagwheels » Thu Jul 07, 2016 6:26 pm

Hi Lads. I have a bad rattle from the upper timing chain and went to tighten it and the locking plunger on the adjustment that tightens the chain was stuck. It tapped in easy but I cant get it out now. Any idea on how to get it out now.
Regards John

It'll often stick if there is tension on the chain. Wiggle the vernier wheel back and forth until it pops out.

If you can't budge it loosen the chain and remove the lock nut, lock washer then the vernier wheel, Be careful not to drop them into the sump. BE aware that the plunger is spring loaded and has nothing to restrain it once the wheel is off, so keep a finger on it to stop it shooting out as well. Then you can gently release it and put it all back together again.
Andrew.

So I took it apart and the plunger still stuck solid. Discovered it would move in a circle so I got a grips on it and moved it from left to right and worked it out after about 30min of struggling with it.

Excellent!

Always a bit scary when you take that nut off...

Yes it would be very easy to drop one of the bits in to the engine. Thanks
