As a close out of the original question on this topic, I have replaced the Jaguar sender unit and gauge with those purchased from the JEC spares and, hey presto, I now have a correct oil pressure reading for the first time in something like 15 years on this car.
Thanks for all the help and ideas.
Incorrect Oil Pressure reading
#22
Hi,
I have an oil pressure problem I would like help with.
On cold start-up gauge shows 60 plus a little more maybe.
After 15 miles, thoroughly warmed up drops down to 10 to 20.
I have read all the above so am fully up to speed.
Gauge and sender reliability:
One thing to mention is that I have had my gauges refurbished.
I questioned the company with the readings above.
They said that the gauge could be trimmed using the two screw holes in the rear of the gauge.
What would that do?
Anyone tried that?
Not enough oil:
Is 200mm from dip stick flange to full mark about the right measurement?
Thanks,
Nick.

Nick the only sure way to confirm your gauge is correct is to benchmark it against a known good one. I would not recommend 'twiddling pots' until you have done this.

1. Is the dipstick the correct one for the E-Type? Should have an E engraved on the tip.
2. The oil pressure gauge is usually accurate, it is the sender's that are the problem. Pointless messing around with the adjuster screw as you will be deluding yourself. Try a new sender or install the JEC gauge/sender combination which work on a different principle to the originals. Alternatively install the mechanical gauge which is always accurate.
3. What kind of oil are you using as it will affect the readings?
4. Could be a weak bypass valve spring.

Hi,
Yes I use 20/50 oil.
My dipstick has an E at the end.
Have carried out a comparison with a mechanical gauge and found mine is reading 10 psi low across the range.
Mechanical gauge results, briefly.
60 + psi at start up.
20 psi at tickover after 30 minute run and 45 psi at 300 rpm.
Went down the wrong route, you will probably say, and bought a replacement sender from a well known supplier.
Has the number 1801-06 etched on it which I believe is correct.
Sadly new sender reads lower than my old (45 years) sender.
Plus does not rise above 20 psi when engine at 3000 revs.
Sender has the correct numbers but does appear to have a smaller hole
for oil to impact diaphragm. Could this be a problem? Or is it taken care of within the instrument?
See here..........
Has anyone here achieved a result when replacing an old electrical sender with a new one?
Nick.

I replaced my sender and gauge with the JEC ones and they worked fine. Only problem I had was my VSE02 engine produced in excess of 60psi so I then fitted a 100psi mechanical gauge and sender form M&C Wilkinson. Both seem very accurate. Suggests you go the JEC route.
