Head lamps cover removal

Hi all,

I would like to clean up my two sugar scoops of the headlamps. In order to do so, I have to dismantle those. I am a little afraid of what that entails. has anybody done this before and/or seen it documented with pics or step by step as I suspect that some care is needed with the seals, wiring etc. ? Can I do this alone or do I need another "body" ? What needs to be done from the outside and what from the inside?

Is the truth really not out there ?? I am giving this another try as I really could use any help. Is there anybody who has done that him/her self or who at least could point me to a thread of some sort in this or another forum as I had no luck.

If you just want to clean the scoops take off the chrome rings, remove the glass and seals and you can clean/polish to your hearts content. Have to do it regularly on my car.

again, many thx. However, I am a little wary not about taking the chrome rings and glass/seal off but putting them back on again.

I heared so many horror stories about not/bad fitting when trying to get them assembled again. May be I am overreacting but jst waned to be sure that no insurmountale problems wold exist or to get any pointers on the re-installation.

As you will end up taking them on/off frequently make sure you put some copper based grease (e.g. Copperease) on the screws as they do tend to rust.

I will admit replacing the chrome rings is not the most joyous of tasks as you seem to need three hands!

I found the secret to puting the rings back is to screw in some long screws by hand just to ensure that everything is lined up and then to replace them one by one with the correct screws. Still don't fully tighten the screws straight off. Get them all in and then nip them up.

As you are replacing rings and gaskets that are already fitted there shouldn't be any problems. The real fun is fitting new ones for the first time.

Theres an article in the E Type club magazine about this , this month not the closed headlamps but covers all the problems putting the chrome on sounds a pig of a job.....
