Neither is a true serial number. The ***1234 -style number is stamped on the upper left rear side of the alloy top cover and the nearby upper read boss of the iron casing.

I've had another look and found JBN3229
I'm trying to change the gearbox in my series 1 2+2 to include an overdrive
I've bought this gearbox and I'm reasonably sure it will fit but just wanted to confirm before I have it reconditioned
Its all seems the same as the one I've taken out it just has one less hole in the bell housing on the top under the fixing bracket
It's been a while since I took the gearbox out so I'm not sure if this is an issue
Any idea where's the best place to get the gearbox and overdrive reconditioned
Cheers

Sounds OK but a pic would help. N means overdrive but the overdrive should have a plate at the side saying 'Compact Type A'. The length from bell front face to the face of the output flange should be the same as your existing box. 27.5 inches IIRC. The only 'issue' (since you car is already a manual), will be if the JBN has the gear lever set back compared to the original. If so, you'll have to swop tops to get the JBN to fit the console trim.

Sorry bit new to using this
Tried to add pictures hope you can view them
I've checked the height and the new box matches the old one so I shouldn't need to swap anything
I'm in the West Midlands Stourbridge but I'm willing to travel a reasonable distance to make sure I get the right person to recondition the box

Overdrive Services, near Sheffield, are the people for OD work. They may also be able to check your box over. Be careful about gearbox overhaul unless it is absolutely necessary, as modern replacement parts, particularly baulk rings etc, are not as good as the originals
