#1 Hand brake rear brake

Post by Maikel » Wed Nov 29, 2017 9:56 am

Another handbrake components topic

I have recently been busy to restore some of my brake components which have created more questions than answers.
Here is picture of two original NOS hand brake pad carriers.
Who can tell me why the levers do have different length.

When cleaning I found varies colors and got them plated back to what I have seen. Searching the internet I have found restoration of these parts in all kind of shades. What is correct and when did it change, if?! Is there a reliable information on the plating color?

Many thanks

Hi,
I recently restored my ‘63 FHC IRS and stripped and cleaned the handbrake parts. Mine were the original parts and a ‘matched Pair’. I don’t know why yours are different, other than the possibility that a p/o has made a bit of a mistake when replacing a faulty one!

Richard,

those mechanisms shown on the first picture were never installed, they are NOS spare parts. I am just wondering why one has a shorter lever than the other and where it belongs to.

And of course the color shades I am interested in.
Many thanks
Maikel

my guess/memory would suggest that there is a mix of Mk 2 + etype

I can only see two factors at work here:-

1/ If the geometry is being changed by lengthening one of the arms, then this is to make a greater mechanical advantage on one side at the expense of the other - i.e. the mismatch in braking side to side is being attempted to be addressed;
2/ the mechanism moves around its pivot as the handbrake tightens and it needs to be guaranteed that it does not foul the bodywork or heatshields in the tunnel that it sits in.

kind regards
Marek

OK,

thanks all for you input, I tend to believe that the short lever is for a MK as all my research for E Type hand brake did come up with the longer lever.
Bought the short one as a spare or for parts some time ago and was wondering what car it was for.

Any feedback on colour shade?

Many thanks

Maikel

Hi Maikel......as far as im aware it was Cadnium plated (silver look)....vary hard to find someone to cad plate now so most go with zinc plating (silver).....Steve
