Selling my car - advice

Hi all

It's time for to discuss the dreading subject of selling my car. After a few years of glorious ownership I think it's time to sell as we are about to embark on some house renovation work and needs must.

Anyway I have a couple of questions about my car. Firstly where are the best places to sell this type of car? Would you advise using a dealer/specialist to sell the car on my behalf and pay them a commission and what would the likely commission be?

Secondly what sort of value would my car be realistically priced at? It's an original UK 1967 S1 4.2 with history back to 1981. It was restored maybe 6 years with receipts for £20k+ in parts etc and it has gone into XK engineering every winter for the past 2 years to have routine maintenance done as well as a number of other jobs costing around £5500. I am due to speak to XK Engineering later as they know the car well and are highly regarded so I may see if it's a car they would sell on my behalf but I have no idea what sort of money the car might be worth. Any help in recommending places to advertise the car and also a guide on value would be much appreciated

There has been debate on valuations here before....it is really rather difficult (impossible) to value over the internet. As a rough guide the Hagerty valuation tool here says £108k for an excellent one....more for concourse.

This would be an insurance valuation...you would not necessarily get that sum if you sold.

At a very approx guess somewhere around the £80k to £110k depending on what its condition really is like and any interesting history but to be certain you need someone to inspect the car.

You can sell via the many classic car auction houses but you will have a seller's commission to pay or you can sell privately via the club magazine or web sites like car and classic etc...

Or you can take it to one of the e type sellers who will deal with the sale for a commission

Be VERY careful if selling privately...thieves and scammers have been known to respond to adds, kick the tyres to find out where the car is and then pinch later so be ware..no. cheques, no cash...bank transfer and cleared funds before handing over and secure a verified copy of the buyers ID such as a copy of their passport.....

Thanks Julian, some very useful info and wise words on private selling. I will speak to XK Engineering in the first instance as they did an initial report on the car 2 years ago and went through the car back to front and over that time I've been ticking off the small jobs that need doing and XK have done any bigger jobs. I really would like to sell the car through someone like them that know the car and can give it a clean bill of health and provide an inspection report to any potential buyers.

I will let you all know how I get on but if anyone has any other companies they would recommend please post some links

Afraid I can't offer any recommendations based on experience...although I bought mine from a Morgan dealership who were great it has to be said...do your research carefully and, sadly, if selling privately be extremely cautious...I would arrange any initial meet with a potential buyer away from your property....only once you are satisfied they are genuine, honest and have the finance to complete any transaction would I tell them where the car lives...

Private sale will get you the most money probably but selling via an agent or auction house will provide a lot more security to the sale....horses for courses....

Hi, I sold my 2+2 through an advert in Car and Classic. The advert is free for a description and photos. Buyers contact you via an anonymous phone number. Existing adverts may give you an idea of price to be asked.

I sold mine in 24 hours, could possibly asked a higher price but I was very satisfied with the deal. I occasionally speak to the buyer and he seems happy as well. So no comebacks. My car was very honestly described.
The response to the advert was overwhelming.

Buyer left a cash deposit on the day of 10% then arranged a bank transfer for the balance which I made sure was cleared before he picked the car up a week later.

Must say that I find hagerty's a bit understated always, compared to actual prices being achieved. For example, they show a series 2 2+2 in fair condition to be worth £17,200. I'll have a few of those!

I would agree Malcolm...although several seemingly high end cars have failed to sell recently at auction or have sold at the low end of the estimate and below the Hagerty values so it seems the market has at least stabilised a bit....at the end of the day any car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay and the seller is prepared to accept. There is a market for pristine e types and they are advertised at up to £250k or more....but do they sell...

Thanks for the valuation info. After looking through the classifieds I was thinking of offering the car at between £95-100k. It seems there aren't many UK RHD E-types for sale at that sort of price and while I am very proud of my car it's certainly not a trailer queen concourse car. Still waiting to hear from XK Engineering so we will see what they think value wise

I would also highlight a downside of Hagerty's is that they do not take account of things such as Matching Numbers, Heritage Certificate, Service History etc. If you had two identical 4.2 FHCs for sale at £100K and one was full matching numbers and the other had a replacement engine/gearbox, the matching nos car would IMHO immediately look better value.
