Hi,
I saw a photo that Angus posted showing the boot floor of a 66 FHC which shows the floor covered with Flintkote?

The parts catalogue states Flintkote "in luggage floor extension well" and indicates this was on all 4.2's.

My car is a November 65 and I am fairly confident that the boot floor was original.

It was painted and did not have any sign of having pads:

I think I may well fit the pads anyway, to reduce drumming and protect the boot floor, but wondered if my car was an exception and they are fitted to other 4.2's or alternatively if anybody knew when Jaguar first fitted them.

mine did, but i had to replace the whole boot floor, sorry no pics .i have a 65 FHC.
So i have put an anti drumming material on.
perhaps it was a friday car and just missed it off. lol

I was under the impression that it was fitted to Series Two cars onwards until I saw Angus's photo.
It does seem a bit hit and miss with a lot of these things.
If your 65 had it originally and I have a late 65, then I see no problem in fitting it to mine.

Paul, there is a possibility that it was only fitted to the fixed heads as more noise would be heard through the boot in these cars. The OTS cars had insulation on the rear bulkhead.

That's correct Angus. The parts manual list no Flintkote for the roadster boot floor, only for the FHC. In fact, it appears that less Flintkote was fitted as the model series progressed. There certainly seems to be less specified in the 4.2 cars than was specified on the 3.8's.

I would fit it because the only downside to doing so is that it won't be to exact specification.

Edit: I've just realised your car is FHC do, yes, it should have Flintkote.

My very early 4.2 did not have anything on the boot floor, while my '66 that was built 11/65 did. I couldn't find anything in Haddock's book referencing this, so this one is a mystery. I'm not a big fan of having anything back there that can trap water, and my '66 had significant boot-floor rust while my '65did not, so I'd be inclined to leave it out if originality is not an issue. On my '65 I glued a square piece of flintkote onto the top of the fuel tank and added some soundproofing to the bottom of the plywood floorboards. This kept the noise to a tolerable level.

Just for reference, am I/we mixing up Flintkote with the sound deadening pads.

In my original post I meant the tar like pads that stick to and cover the whole floor between the strengtheners and under the tank.
This to me would protect the floor from rust; it certainly has on the front and rear floors of mine to a large extent.
Unfortunately my car was left open to the elements in its previous life and had standing water in it, which necessitated replacing the floors and much more :-(

Flintkote appears to be a bitumen emulsion for waterproofing roofs, now sold by Shell... sounds like it might have been used to deal with leaks rather than noise? Although obv wd have some sound damping effect.
As far as I can tell my car (67 fhc}) had NO sound deadening pads on the floor in the spare well, unlike Angus's. Just Hardura, heavy duty (thick) on the front and rear verticals of the well, and normal (thinner) on top of the tank.
