3.8 four way brake union
#1 3.8 four way brake union
Hi,
Has anyone tried to get a replacement for the brake union that houses the brake light switch? The part no is C17464 and I ordered one from SNG. However, it seems that it is not correct. The mounting bolt that also fastens the picture frame and offside frame - which should be a 5/16x3.5” is too large for the replacement. I’ve emailed Steve @ SNG to see what they suggest but I have cleaned up the original and will fit that in the meantime.

Not sure but looks alot like these UNF carbuildersolutions bits

They come with plenty of meat so you can drill out the hole.

Unless it is cracked or the threads are shot, why would you change this part? I would just clean and refit...Personal opinion of course.

I have to admit that I thought I’d lost the original versions of this and the three way for the rear irs cage, so I ordered replacements. Luckily I found them both and cleaned up nicely - bit of patina left on them! I will check the threads for leaks as small amounts of wear can be difficult to spot, but I am trying to keep as many original parts as possible. I was more interested as to how others fitted this part without having to drill out the bolt hole to take the original 5/16. I wouldn’t be happy having to pay £18 for something that needs work to fit.

Isn't that the way of things with the parts specialists? They just find something that looks vaguely similar, buy it for £2.50 and sell it to us for £18!
That brake union is just plain wrong!

I was surprised - I'd assumed I had ordered the wrong part. I've ordered hundreds of parts and have to say that so far, it really has been only three or four that I've been disappointed with in terms of quality. I've not had any issues with returns so I am not overly concerned. It's the extra time taken to sort things out that is frustrating.

Exactly. Or rather buy for 10 and sell for 200!Series1 Stu wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2018 11:05 pmIsn't that the way of things with the parts specialists? They just find something that looks vaguely similar, buy it for £2.50 and sell it to us for £18!

Just to add insult to injury, this is the response I got from the supplier to the fact that their part wouldn’t fit using the correct spec fasteners:
The 4 way connector C17464 originally would have had a 5/16” bolt however I believe our current stock has a ¼” hole for location and a different brake light switch too (SPB401*). If you would like us to supply the switch we could add it to the order for the pipes.
So, ignoring the point that I already know that their part is drilled for a smaller fastener than the correct 5/16” bolt they seem to suggest that using a 1/4” bolt to mount their part is the way to go. it may only be a millimetre and a half difference in diameter - it’s WRONG! Oh, and would I like to buy another part to go with the unusable item as well!
Give me strength
