What is the average oil usegae for S1 3.8, I know I've read it somwhere but now can't remember where.
I know the 3.8 uses more, I think where I read it was so many hundred miles to the litre

I've just returned from a 1700 mile trip through France and my VSE rebuilt 3.8 used less than half a litre.Car-Nut wrote:What is the average oil usegae for S1 3.8, I know I've read it somwhere but now can't remember where.

Clive, the 3.8 was an oil burner, but so was the 4.2 until Jaguar got around to fitting valve-guide seals in 1969. If your engine has been overhauled, it most likely has the later guides, with seals, fitted to the intake side. On a 600-mile trip my early 4.2 would typically burn less than a 1/2 pint after overhaul. Before, oil consumption was more like a quart every 1,000 miles. This was with Castrol 20/50 GTX in the sump. I would expect your car to show similar figures.

Thanks for your replies, I was just after an idea so after my first oil change I could monitor the oil consumption

Hi Clive,
One of the reasons I decided to rebuild the original engine in my 3.8 was because the one that was in the car was using a pint of oil after approximately 150 - 200 miles. Some was leaking out but most was being burnt.
I'm relieved to say that after 750 miles running-in the new engine, I can't say the level has moved appreciably on the dipstick. But I'm not thrashing it.
However, I read a book by Andrew Whyte who commented on one of the first newly-built 3.8s (maybe the one that went to the Geneva show, not sure) doing 600 miles per gallon.
Oil, not petrol.
So it looks like you can expect anything from 75 to 1000 miles per pint. I hope yours is at the top end!
cheers
