A '65 I'm helping a friend with has a fairly substantial 16" fan mounted IN FRONT of the mesh grill. I.e the fan is not mounted flush with the radiator. Original electric fan with metal blade is removed.
Is this an acceptable method of mounting the fan? Won't substantial amounts of fan air flow, bypass the radiator like this? Or would the fan sit so close to the radiator that it won't really matter?

It is always best for the fan to be mounted on the engine side to draw air through the radiator rather than blow through from the front. However, providing all the air goes through the radiator there will be little difference between the two.
In your case you do need to ensure that there is adequate sealing between the bonnet duct and the radiator. Foam rubber would probably be a way of doing it. There is meant to be a foam rubber pad on top of the radiator to seal to the inside of the bonnet but you need to deal withe sides and the bottom also.

Any fan must be mounted on the radiator or in such a position that ensures ALL the air moved by it must come/go through the core. If there is any gap around the fan, that’s where the air will move, and not through the radiator.
In the case of a fan mounted on the grill, all that is going to do is move air around inside the nose of the car. Only when the car is moving will air go through the radiator, and that when a fan isn’t needed.

As has been said, the fan is best mounted in an enclosed shroud to ensure that the air is pushed or pulled through the core.
There is a strong argument for mounting the fan in front of the radiator and pushing air forward as this keeps the fan in the cool air, thereby extending it's useful life.

I agree with both Chris and Stuart. I had obviously misunderstood the installation. The fan does need to be ducted, simply mounting it on the grille without blanking off the sides will just stir the air around inside the nose.

That is true, although it does depend on how strong the airflow is, how close to the radiator it is mounted and how much resistance the radiator presents to the airflow.
Definitely better with a properly shrouded fan.
