Post by Charles BLANCHET » Thu Mar 29, 2018 7:22 am

Hi guys,
I restore a jaguar type e serie 1 3.8 fhc and i have a problem with the centrale console.I found that the ashtray for this model was the reference bd 24548(my chassis number is 886928).and what about the vertical piece where the radio come: is it metalic or is it leather or skai(like a 4.2)
Thanks for your help.

Charles,
Suggest you add a picture or two as your question isn't clear to me.
Ou vous le reformulez en francais ?
I have pictures that may help, as I re-did my interior trim last year.

dear guy,
sorry for my english , i hope you can have a look to the pictures.
my problem is that : the vertical part where is the radio is a mettalic part for a lot of fhc 3.8 serie 1, but i found in a book that the ashtray above the radio is a larger one. so my question is : is it possible that this vertical part(of the console) is cover by leather ( or something like that ) or is it a mettallic part.
I hope , it is alittle bit more clear.

This is what it should look like, I think.

Your ash-tray indeed looks too big fro a 3.8. Others will probably tell you what car it's from.

These are of my car.

and this one below shows, incidentally, the extra "boudins" that BAS knocked up for me to fill the gap that sometimes occurs at the junction of the centre consoles.

and these are shots of a - I believe unrestored - circa 1962 car I photographed in Switzerland a few years ago.

Hope this helps.

Most of us use the Jaguar publication called J.30 which only shows BD.20410 (the smaller one) for the 3.8, but someone else will chime in to put us right if there was indeed a May 1963 modification and what it looked like.

Hi Charles,

My OTS is a june 1963 / 879697 and the ashtray is the same as Rory.
Of course because of the part stock, a decision in may couldn't be apply before some weeks.
however your ashtray seems to be a 4.2L model that appeared later.
Around the ashtray it's leather as on the shutter if there isn't a radio.

Just to say that if the previus owner smoke, this ash tray is realy more usable than the original small one !

Well.
It seems that the later 3.8L had this ash tray BUT at this moment all the aluminium parts had been change for leather and vinyl.
So If you want to keep your dot aluminium, change the ash tray.
Look at Serie 1 /the factory fit 3.8L, p 11. ( I stoped to page 11 for you, you'll look at the other pages ...)
If you would have an E Type conform to the original, it's important to often look at the factory fit.
Two "must have" book :
"E Type The definiitive history" by P. PORTER ( the bible...)
"Jaguar E tType six-cylinder originaly guide" by F Haddock and C.Muller ( a lot of photos )
