#1 Fan belt

Post by Simonpfhc » Fri May 04, 2018 8:21 am

Ho all,

Just checking a few things on the car last night and spotted that the fan belt was about to give up. Only done about 1500 miles and bought maybe two years ago, but the whole belt was full of deep cracks. No signs of unusual wear but seems very hard and perished!

Anyway, by chance I had recently bought a spare and went about fitting that. Took about two hours! The new belt seems slightly too small and is frighteningly tight! I have removed the tensioner and had to remove the dnynamo to get the belt on. The cente groove in the belt (my 62 engine uses the double ‘v’ belt) is definitly smaller than the groove on the worn-out belt so sits a little higher which may account for the tight fit?

Either way I need to buy another as a spare and want to try from another source. My original, perished belt along with the new one came from SNG.

Anyone bought a belt from any other source?

Cheers.

If I was you, I'd ring SNG and explain your problem - they're normally very helpful. Maybe they sent you the belt for the wrong series/engine, and could send a (free) replacement that fits properly. You don't want a belt that's too tight.

We've had a number fail like this. Bad batch?

When new, they are tighter. They will lengthen within the first 500 - 1000 miles.

My problem is similar. I do not get the new belt fitted as it sits to tight. However the old one became too long and sits loose - early 61 FHC
