#1 Fan belt tensioner

Post by ALAN COCHRANE » Fri May 04, 2018 6:42 pm

Hi Everyone

My latest problem involves the fan belt tensioner wheel. I have removed it to replace the pulley which had noisy bearings. So far all my attempts to retension the spring have been defeated. I've used tie wraps hooked around the crankcase damper and a specially adapted large screwdriver so far. I almost got the spring hooked around the pulley arm and then it went ping-very frustrating.
The whole setup isn't helped by the total lack of space due to the close proximity of the water pump and steering column UJ. This prevents the pulley arm being swung into the hook on the end of the spring, which would make the whole job a breeze, but this is a Jaguar after all.
Any tips would be very gratefully received.
I would like to keep the tensioner since I think it's a good idea, allowing you to use a larger belt and making it easy to replace by the roadside.

Cheers

Take it off the car and assemble as a unit on the bench before bolting it on.

:yeahthat: and you can then also lubricate the bearing or replace it.

I had thought of removing the mounting. Unfortunately there’s insufficient space between the lower bolt and the water pipe hose to allow it’s withdrawal. So I’ve decided to run without the jockey wheel for the time being. I’ll refit it the next time I’m doing a coolant change.

Cheers
