#1 Horn push

Post by andrewh » Mon May 07, 2018 7:29 am

So when I restored my 3.8 I decided I did not like the colour of the new horn pushes or the plastic surround. I therefore purchased a new chrome as mine was nasty and fitted into my old horn. However, 3 years on and the tabs on the chrome surround have given up and the horn popped out of he steering wheel due to the pressure of the spring on the end of the rod. I tried to araldite in the old chrome ring, but it will not hold. Has anyone been through this experience, or is it just me. I see that new horn push assemblies are available but the Gold leaf in the horn still looks too silver to me. Any thoughts out there please?

I used the chrome ring from a repro horn push to repair my original. If you gently prise the tabs up you can push the chrome ring out and fit it into the original. Best to try and keep the original because the repros are horrible - chequered flag size, growler shape and colour all wrong.

thanks David. This is what I did, I think because you advised at the time. However, the tabs broke! they dont like being bent twice and SNG dont make the ring available on its own!

Andrew, easy - just pay silly money like I just did and buy a nice used original - AUD$300 inc postage. Hoping to recover a small amount back selling my repro which is in good nick but agree that the colour and detail is very average hence the purchase.

Cheers,

well I got a bit lucky as it happened. I found that I did have a used one with a dreadfully scratched push nd broken outer, but the ring was fine, so I rebuilt it into my original .

fingers crossed this hold together.
