#1 Lock barrel direction?

Just wondering if anyone can give me information on the direction of door lock barrels in a series 1 FHC. I have noted that the factory manual has them in an "inverted" position in the door handle with the serrated edge of the key facing upwards but, whilst some cars adhere to this, others have them so that the serrated edge of the key faces down. Any thoughts or observations?
Thanks.

They are different on either door.

That solves that then.
Thanks for the info.

My 62 DHC has the key serrations pointing upwards on both doors which I believe is the correct orientation.... it does admittedly look/feel a bit ‘wrong’ so i’m happy to be corrected. The barrels are in fact handed - my original Wilmot Breeden FP (early) code barrels have an arrow to “LOCK” and that arrow direction differs right to left. Incidentally, I believe the ignition barrel also shares this key serration up orientation

Thanks for this info.
I've just bought a matched set of door barrels and ignition from SNG and they are definitely "handed".

Hi Rod

Have you fitted them yet? Would be keen to know how you get on.

I purchased the same set and had stripped down the first door handle so it was just the old barrel within the chromed plunger. But bottled out at that point - it looked like you had to push out a pin to release the actual barrel. Did not fancy it as was only a couple of days away from a show and did not want to get into problems.

Maybe a winter job. But would value any feedback you have of doing the job.

Cheers
Ash

My locks are handed. Serrations downwards on the drivers side (RHD) key.

When I bought my car it had different key numbers for each door. I eventually changed the lock detents in the odd door lock so that I had just one key. I don't remember it being too difficult to do - once I had worked out which of the detents I needed, and who supplied them.

Hi Ash,
I've trial fitted the door barrels and they are operating well.
The job was easier than I thought it would be, although my car is totally apart so it was only a matter of getting the barrels out, installing the new ones and fitting the outer door handles.
Once you have the door handle out the strip of fittings is fairly straightforward but the barrel is held in place by a small transverse pin that needs to be punched out. Once the pin is out, the barrel will just push out. I took photographs as I progressed and I only did one at a time in case I stuffed up. Take your time and you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Cheers Rod

Can you show which hand goes on which side and which way up for the key?
