#1 Steel cylinder head gasket

Post by drichards » Mon Jul 23, 2018 8:18 am

I have a 62 3.8 OTS going through restoration. At some point the car has to be imported into Australia and they are very strict about proving no asbestos is present in the car. My restorer has removed the old cylinder head gasket which appears to be a composite and while we are fairly certain it does not contain any asbestos, for the avoidance of doubt we will replace it (no doubt wise to in any event). He has a steel gasket and suggested we use this but reading various blogs on the topic, most cite modern composites perform much better. Curious as to members views on this and historically (out of interest only) would my model even have had a factory fitted gasket containing asbestos. Cheers

Exhaust wire-reinforced manifold gaskets and downpipe sealing rings, probably. Factory head gaskets, no.
