Post by antra » Thu Oct 18, 2018 5:23 am

Hi all of you

Thanks for letting me join and this is my first post.
I´m currently planning on making an complete overhaul on my series 1 roadster.

Is it someone out there who could reply to below questions refering to UK market?:

1. Wich company offers best reputable enginerebuilds ?
2. How much do you have to pay for this?
3. Is it some company that offers good work at best possible price (Bang for buck)?
4. Restoring the Moss gearbox, how much would that cost in general?.

Thanks alot all of you in advance

Depends where you are and how far you will travel ........ possibly.

Start by referring to this recent post:

Thanks alot Jerome for your reply

I´ve read the post but it was not so much advice there and no hints about costs in general.

Hope somebody could join the tread and tell me more about overhaulcosts and what to expect from this kind of work needed (if possible also cost of gearbox overhaul on the Moss gearbox)

Best regards antra

If the engine has been overhauled in the past it really should not need a rebuild unless it has been grossly maltreated in storage/disuse. These engines are quite easy to run out of the car standing on the floor and with a jury rigged radiator and fuel and electrical supplies . That is what I would do , to try and assess its condition. If you can run it properly without horrid noises, lashes of smoke etc, and then once thorughly warmed up check its compressions etc you will get a good idea of where you stand. Costs ? How long is a piece of string ? head work is usually £500 to 1000 although it can bea lot more if new guides, seats etc are needed, or it the head water passages are corroded. A set of pistons is about £400 . Boring /grinding work about the same Bearings and gaskets etc about £500 altogether. A complete strip and rebuild may well take 50 to 70 hours , so even at say £50 per hour plus VAT ( cheap ) you are looking at say £4000 labour . As you can see for a good going over you are talking at least £6000 to 7000 unless you do a lot of the work yourself, so look before you leap is a good idea
