#1 3.8 Hex socket plug on block

Post by pgh64 » Sun Sep 16, 2018 7:10 pm

Hi, does anybody know what the Hex drive size is for the threaded plugs on a 3.8 E type engine block? I've got one weeping and need to source a large Hex drive socket. I can't find any part number or reference to these in the factory parts manual or with the usual suppliers. It's the plug slightly above and to the left of the "3.8" stamping. Thanks

My 3.8 block is bare and stripped, and I was looking at my hex plug just the other day thinking I ought to remove it and re-seal it even though it has never leaked .............

Tried to make a hex spanner from various bolt-heads and a welded shank etc - only to just bend everything without a trace of movement .........

The size is 5/8" hex which is so close (15.88) to 16mm that I suspect a 16mm allen hex would fit .............. currently have neither.

PS Your engine stand looks like it needs one of these :

5/8". Perfect! I found a set of Hex impact sockets at Harbor Freight here in the US for less than $30 that has the 5/8" socket. It's a good source for cheap tools that you'll use infrequently although their impact stuff is above average. BTW, my engine is actually in the car. I just posted that photo for reference. Thanks for the info!!! https://www.harborfreight.com/8-pc-12-i ... 61335.html
