#1 Clutch bite point

Post by dale bowman » Tue Dec 11, 2018 12:52 pm

Could anyone advise on where in the pedal travel the clutch should bite. My S1 3.8 is fitted with a 4.2 / all synco box and currently bites in the last inch or so of pedal travel. The clutch only has 10000 miles on it.

Might just be an adjustment thing? Mine was biting very high, then started slipping, and a new clutch put the bite lower. But they are adjustable.

Could be out of adjustment, a simple fix, or it could be a worn out release bush/bearing. If so, it is not a cheap fix.

Hi Dale,
if I remember correctly, the workshpp manual tells you exactly how to adjust free play (just without crunchng of the gears). Havng said that it depends on what kind of clutch slave cyl you have - we are talking about the adjustable type. Moreover bleed the clutch slave several times and do some racing starts  before final adjustment. The idea is to prevent clutch slip i.e. a lot of free travel.

Good luck

I think a worn out release bearing has the opposite effect : the clutch bites near the bottom of the pedal travel
