Value S1 Jag e-type 4.2 LHD Roadster
#21 Re: Value S1 Jag e-type 4.2 LHD Roadster
Hi Paul,
Really I think the good question isn't " how much this would cost to buy?" but " how much am I able to spend to restore it?"
For the car n°1 you just be persuaded that you are going to need a lot of money to have a valuaded car at last. Even if you are a pro for bodywork, mecanical and other competence jobs. You'll need also professionnel tools and you'r going to use them sometimes only once time. You'll need parts, a lot of parts and they are not cheap. The way is long to have this kind of car on the road, 5 or 10 years ? it's depend on you.
For the car n°2, for the moment the market's law makes this car less valuable than the first at last. It's a pity but it's like this.( There is some kit to make them look like series 1 but the reverse doesn't exist ! ) For this one you also need money ( nearly 4000£ for the 3 webers and inlet manyfold for exemple ) but surely less than the n°1. Inside the car you'll get the same pleasure to drive it than the n°1.
Nobody can tell you if theses cars are good to buy or not and their value with only photos. It would be too simple.
You must to auscultate the car with somebody who know very well the E Type and the price of a restoration and if you have enough resourses in front of you, and only in that case, buy the n°1 of course.
Otherwise continue to dream, it's also a good thing to have dreams.
Mich

… Although, this could be just to his dealership as opposed to himself. Here's another '67 OTS with a similar provenance.

I love the way the battery tray is just lying on the floor under the sill. Probably slammed the door too hardPhilk wrote: ↑Wed Jan 16, 2019 3:58 pm… Although, this could be just to his dealership as opposed to himself. Here's another '67 OTS with a similar provenance.

Hi James,I find the E type market totally confusing, why in the world would someone pay 55k for a project series one coupe, when one of the people on this forum has what looks like a really nice series one coupe for sale at 85k?

Some people value doing the restoration project as much as driving the car!

I called in to CMC on Monday on my way past and spent some time talking to Wayne about the market. They have some very nice cars there, as you would expect, including a 61 FHC on commission sale, which they restored in 2011. They had just dropped the price by £30k to £195k. Similarly, they had dropped a Coombs MK2 to £250k.
This seems to bear out that the market is moving downward.
I blame the B word.

I bought a car from Beverley Hills Car Club 3 years ago and I was very happy at the time with the accuracy of the representation and the process. This part was really the easy part.
The car needed completely rebuilding and shifting from left to right etc..
After 3 years the car is still not finished (of course) and I now have a clearer idea of everything.
If you are going to employ specialists to rebuild the car and this would be everything, which invariably a project will need, then you need to allow at least £100,000. If the car requires extensive welding and replacement of floors and frames for instance then probably £10,000 to £20,000 more than that.
In short there are so many good cars out there that will never meet their true rebuild cost I would take my money and buy the best restored car I could find. Obviously you make sure you take an etype expert with you when viewing any car.
Don't get carried away thinking you will make money as a privateer restorer from an etype. This is very unlikely other than in the long run should market values rise again as they did. You must go in with the attitude that it will cost you a small fortune and the enjoyment comes from the process and the end result.
Just my two pennies worth.
Chris

Wise words from Chris. Unless someone's aim is not the restoration itself, by experience I would strongly recommend buying the best example one can afford. I would look out especialy for a car with a good body/ paint, which is the biggest single workpackage expense during restoration.

I would second the statement that its about the journey not the destination. I stared some 2 years ago on building a Lindner Nocker Low Drag. The reasons being that to find a replica at a price point I could afford was impossible, I retired about 2 years ago and the project fills in some of my spare time and I find the act of restoration/rebuild very therapeutic.
