#1 SU conversion on 1968 S1.5, what thermostat housing to use?

Post by david.coan » Sun Jan 13, 2019 2:22 pm

I am a newbie here and this is my first post.
I have recently imported into the UK a 1968 series 1.5 which is being converted to RHD and next i am to set about removing the twin strombergs and install a triple SU set up. I did not buy the kit as there was very long lead time and i also thought the kit was more expensive at £4500, so i have bought the items needed individually over the last few weeks , including the SUs, the air box, air trumpets, inlet manifold and all the linkage etc.
My question is -
Should i retain my existing series 2 style thermostat housing, or replace it with the series 1 4.2 housing? My existing housing and water outlet is very tired looking, but would i assume make the pipework reconnection easy. I bought the Series 1 housing, as would have been supplied with the full kit, but i see i have a bleed pipe in my current set up on my 1.5 which does not exist on the earlier housing. I understand i would if i used the series 1 housing simply blank off the bleed point at the radiator end. Any advice is welcome as to the benefits of retaining my existing pipework set with the bleed arrangement on the series 2.

The S1 manifold requires a special thermostat which is not readily available although SNGB can supply one: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?p=65081#p65081

When I converted mine from stromberg to SUs I retained the existing Stromberg thermostat housing and hose connection end piece.
Series 1 FHC purchased 40 years ago. Courted my wife in it.
Series 1 2+2 when the kids were small now sold.
Series 1.5 OTS in opalescent maroon, Californian car. My retirement present.

David C, are you certain you’ve bought the correct SUs for an E Type as not all will fit?
Why not let us know which you’ve got? May save you problems.

Good luck

Thanks for the info, i dont have the S1 4.2 thermostat, it was not on my shopping list, which already grew and grew. I bought the set of SUs from SC parts, https://www.scparts.co.uk/sc_en/british ... 14411.html
So they should be correct, they arrive next week i am promised, build up your own kit across several parts suppliers i reckon saved me £1k and has increased my knowlege 10 fold.
Perhaps for phase 1 swap over i will just stick with my current series 2 thermostat housing and pipework, try and clean it up, i can always change it in the future to the more attractive series 1 style when i have aquired more knowledge and experience.
