Starter motor cable routing
#1 Starter motor cable routing
Hi.
This is my first post on this forum. I am almost at the end of a complete restoration of a 1967 rhd fhc but need some help in the routing of the cable from battery post to the starter motor. I looked at a OTS at the Duxford auction last week and it appeared to go all the way up to the picture frame before heading back via the right hand frame, but it was difficult to be sure. The shortest distance would be in front of the bulkhead but none of the cars I’ve had a chance to look at seem to do that. Also is this cable cotton covered or just black pvc?
Interestingly the car at Duxford was built 4 days after mine (12th May 1967) but had open headlights whilst mine are covered.
Terry.

You are right. Down along the round diagonal tube of the left engine frame to the picture frame, across the top of the bottom rail of the frame and then back to the starter along the bottom rail of the right engine frame.

Hi Andrew and Steve
Thanks for the quick response. I can now make up the cable and fit before I install the engine. Andrew your car is in the same batch as mine. My chassis is 1E21543. Not yet on Jagdata but will be soon.

Thanks for the pics. I have also been able to sort out a couple of other issues with regard to the positioning of choke and speedo exits from the bulkhead. All very helpful.

Hi Andrew and Steve,
Could you confirme
" Down along the round diagonal tube of the left engine frame to the picture frame etc etc"
The pics don't show this.

On my car the cable runs along the underside of the upper member of the picture frame. This is how it was when I got it and there was nothing to indicate that it wasn't like that originally. When I replaced the cable during the restoration I followed the same route. (I also sleeved the cable in braided sleeving on Julian Cactusman's recommendation for added protection).

For the record and after having had the opportunity to examine a couple of cars, I have gone for under the top rail, along the bottom of the upper picture frame rail, and along the upper inner rh rail. This way all the electrical cables are kept separate from hydraulic pipes as far as possible and at least makes sense to me.
Thanks for all the replies.
