#1 Moving on, current ideas on value sought
I guess it comes to us all at some point, due to a change in direction including a house extension its time for me to part with my E type. I'd like if I may to ask for your views on current values.
The car is an original Series 1 UK right hand drive Open Two Seater made during 1966. Its Dark Blue with a red interior. All matching numbers (for those who are interested) The car has had a fair aount of work done to it and I would think it to be an ideal candidate for complete restoration. Its a running driving car that I have used to go to events like the Classic Le Mans on a number of occasions. The body work has been restored at the rear, new petrol tank fitted and rear axle overhauled (diff was dione by Dana) but generally has the patina of a well used car. I have been accumulating some parts for a far off restoration, these include: 3 crankshafts, one new in the crate, set of std Mahle pistons, a set of engine, idler and camshaft sprockets together with chains and tensioner blades (all genuine Jaguar from SNG's) pair of spare genuine Triplex headlamp glass covers, a set of wide blade rods s/h etc etc. I have a heritage certificate from JDHT and the car's original purchase receipt.

How can anyone give you a value based on just a description.......look at all the other E types that are for sale on line and and decide where yours fits......what would you expect to pay for it?.....as for parts in my opinion better to sell seperatly........workout a price then post in our Sale section........or is this just a way of selling on the forum without giving a price.........Steve

I’ve just had a couple of valuations done by marque specialists for insurance/sale purposes - they require lots of photos and history, bills receipts etc. I suggest you do the same to give you an idea, along with the suggestion above to look at the market. Lanes Cars and EType UK offer this service.

Values of cars actually sold seem to be all over the place in recent months and on the whole , if real world sales are to be heeded, seem to have been slipping . If the car is structurally sound , and not a L to R conversion , so that any restoration would be cosmetic and mechanical only,and would only be needed if the purchaser felt like it , then the sort of price that such cars realise seem to have been in the range of £ 70,000 to £ 90,000 , but there have been some outliers which were significantly lower . The trouble with insurance valuations is that these tend use replacement asking price from a dealer as a guide , and just as real world prices have been slipping, other-worldly asking prices have been rising to stupid levels such as , purely at a guess, £ 175,000 .
If one needed a warning against using these sort of figures ( plucked off a wall ) as a guide to oneself, it is given amply by the fate of JD Classics and , indeed, its customers including the luckless Mr Tuke - and for that matter , Coys before its latest reincarnation. The whole trade , including some of the auction houses , abounds with spivs , so all i can say is, be very, very careful who you a.listen to and b.deal with

Neil, you suggest it would be an ideal candidate for a complete restoration. Do you mean cosmetic, i.e. paint and trim? Or can the buyer expect to start replacing metalwork, sills, panels, etc.? That’ll make a significant difference to the value, I’d suggest.

As I think most have pointed out, trying to establish an appropriate valuation especially without photos is difficult, I appreciate this. The car is a genuine right hand drive series 1 OTS, 1 of 862 built for all rhd markets (numbers from xkedata) it was originally sold through Mists Garage in Birmingham and still has their dealer plaque on the centre console. Whilst much work has been carried out there is still much to do and I guess because it still retains all of its matching number parts would make it an ideal car for complete restoration.
Prices for E Types like a lot of other things tend to fluctuate, my request for informed thoughts on what might be a sensible asking price fort such a car was not to wring the last penny out of a sale but to get a 'fair' sum indication and thereby hopefully pass on ownership to someone who will do the car justice. I'll mull over your comments and will in due course place an ad in the for sale section.

Such as ........

Youth has little or no interest
Local government brainwashing , the existence of your car killing man kind.
Then the happier side of 5 dollar gasoline in the states and.......
Possible WW3 with a slight hint of Nuclear War ?
Casts a shadow on your estimate
If you HAVE TO SELL , SELLITAND MOVE ON.......
As someone rightly predicted, if your 50ish or above, WE ARE THE LAST.
Maybe a flat floor or a real good driver will move on,but the numbers are dropping and dropping at a good clip.
I m trying to arrange burial plans with mine, but the ground water will be effected :)

The rough guide could be calculated so if a concourse car is worth £140K and a full restoration is say !00K then the asking price would be 40K and so on, I can tell you I consider my car between excellent to concourse but not quite and it already owes close to top dollar so I am also going to drive it until we run out of fuel or run out of me!

Have you checked auction sale prices to check comparables with your car? Historics had around 6 e types at their auction on Saturday and you can see their results and pictures on their website. Also Silverstone auctions had a few in their last auction. Or check through the online auction sites for past e type sales - Collecting Cars, The Market, Trade Classics. You’ll need to allow for fees to get to a cash in hand figure. So for a physical auction like Historics/Silverstone etc it would work out something like - £60000 hammer price + 12% fee inc vat = a sales result showing of £67200, and then there’s 12% inc vat commission paid by the seller = £52800 cash in pocket. For online auctions its usually just 6% inc vat, paid by the buyer on CC and TC, and the seller on TM.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I think the E-types future is rosy. Petrol will always be with us although how we access it may change (and price) JLR will still be turning out fantastic rebuilds (a multi million investment) and younger people will take them up (how many of todays Supermarine Spitfire pilots flew during the war?) I certainly think some cars will disappear without trace and that is maybe for the best in some cases. As to the OP's valuation we do need photos to help you -

In essence to obtain a better idea for price gauging you really need to do a bit of work in creating a draft sales listing with description, history, condition and faults/damages etc'. You also need to take as many as many photos as you can of the car from all angles and relevant detail photos of engine bay, interior and such. I am sure if that was presented here the responses would have been more meaningful.
