#1 C17544 special washer under air intake box wing nuts

Post by ysmalkie » Sat Apr 27, 2019 3:33 pm

Would anyone have the original C17544 washer for air intake box wing nuts?

It's not a standard one, so it could be wider, thicker or might have special finish..

Would anyone help?

Hi Tadek

Don't have an original one but maybe this closeup will allow you to see what it was like:

Image

It is a 'repair' washer (also known as a mudguard, fender or penny washer) as against a 'plain' washer and having a particularly large outside diameter to provide a greater area for distributing the load; useful in securing something a traditional nut and washer would pull through.

Outer diameter of 1" and 5/16" centre, 1/16" thick and originally cadmium plated. Generally available although usually in metric equivalents of 25mm x M8 x 1.65mm and zinc plated. I use a spring washer as well because the wing nuts can come undone and the original size is expensive to replace at £7 each. Spring washer can't be seen when in place.

You can buy them here amongst other places: http://www.racetorations.co.uk/fastener ... washer-p33

I will add an update to Factory Fit to cover them: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?p=35355#p35355

I am still looking for one original wing nut. I have one original and one repro, but the repro looks different.

Anyone a source ? Where they used on other Jags, maybe in other places ?

I thought the repro's are pretty much exactly the same as the originals - cast brass and cad plated:

David, once again, many thanks!

One more item relating to the plenum are the C4202/2 nuts used all the way from XK120. They were nickel plated on the XK120, but I would probably believe they were cad plated on the e-type?

Would you know if they were they still stamped PPPPP?

Yes, cadmium plated on the E-Type.

The 'P' stamp refers to the tensile strength (BS 1083):

Nut-Grades are : A, P, R, T where minimum tensile strength is:
Grade A = 28 tonf/in
Grade P = 35 tonf/in
Grade R = 45 tonf/in
Grade T = 55 tonf/in

So if Jaguar chose a nut with a Grade P tensile strength for that application they would continue to use it in production unless there was significant change to the design.

I am checking to see why Race Restorations list two washers of the same size (FAS009 and FAS067) but one is twice the price of the other. Could be the thickness - I will report back.

Was the PPPP stamped on the nuts in the 60ies?

I will take a pic of my two winged nuts :-), so we can compare.

Maybe the one I found on the car is the weitd one, and the repro is the better one ?

We‘ll see.

Yes. More info on nut and bolt markings in Factory Fit if you search: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?p=56692#p56692

They got back to me. It was a typo on their web site. The correct washer is FAS067. http://www.racetorations.co.uk/fastener ... asher-p105

Went on to the website to order and then stopped in my tracks at the delivery cost. Each washer costs 44p including VAT. Delivery for a pair weighing virtually nothing = £5.40!!!

A pity we did not have this part of the thread ahead of Angus' bash..... one of us could have bought a "bulk" purchase of 20 washers (for 10 cars) and each person could have paid £0.54 each in "postage" as we handed them around.

SNGB sell them for 18p each but would still charge you £5+ for p&p. However if you are ordering other stuff just add them to your list: https://www.sngbarratt.com/uk/#!/Englis ... 0de5a7ae80

Or, if you are passing B&Q, you can buy a pack of 10 for £2.58: https://www.diy.com/departments/diall-m ... 008_BQ.prd

Nothing special about them - just repair washers!
