Windscreen trim panel part number.
#1 Windscreen trim panel part number.
This is the trim panel that goes above the windscreen on S1 FHCs; this one is for a 4.2 and I think the 3.8 one is slightly different. In the picture it is being held upside down.
Can anyone tell me what the part number is? I have drawn an absolute blank.
Cheers.

I think this is the panel you mean - this was mine after I stripped it, prior to retrimming in the headlining material.
Windscreen header panel. Bd.20106 on a 3.8, probably the same for S14.2.

That's likely the beast thanks Richard. Now to see if anyone makes it.
If not the one Steve has found might do the trick...anything's better than trying to make one.

Hutson’s used to make the rear panel that the interior light is fixed to, they may make the front assembly as well.

#7 Re: Windscreen trim panel part number.
I think those are the support panels that hold the roof and have the captive nuts in them, as on a second look is BD32927 too.
I guess that the demand for the trim panel is small. Mine dissolved into rust like most of the rest of my car's body...
Worst comes to worst I'm going to try making a mould of one and casting it in fibreglass or perhaps try using thermoplastic sheet to copy it.
Andrew.

Andrew : CMC at Bridgnorth , UK ( Classic Motor Cars ) do a lot of E type restoration, and are now to my knowledge making 1 off parts using the latest in digital copying technology . Provided they , or someone else, can produce an original to work from they may ( no doubt at a price ) be able to produce one - although it has to be said that I think this works better for castings than for pressings

I was missing mine. In fact I didn't know I needed one until the trim kit came.
I got mine from Ken Verity. It is identical to the pictures Richard posted.

#11 Re: Windscreen trim panel part number.
Thanks all of you! Searching for BD24086 in the Barratt's catalogue shows it being used in later 3.8 and S1 and S2 4.2s. Unfortunately all my PDFs of the original parts catalogues are not searchable by text.
I asked Robeys about BD20106 but they don't make it. Looking more at the Barratt's catalogue this is the pn for the actual reinforcing rail with the captive nuts, not the trim panel. I shall try again with BD24086. I'll ask Hutsons and Ken V as well.
Otherwise I'm going to try casting one in fibreglass or using thermoplastic sheeting as my quote for making one in steel was "that'll take a whole day minimum".

Hi Andrew
As per Steve’s reply earlier, the parts catalogue for the 3.8 have the 2 different panels for trimming as below:
Apologies, my earlier post quoted the strengthening panel with the captives. They are described differently as you can see depending on the chassis number. Mine is a later number 889504 but was not riveted (nor had been). The 4.2 S1 parts list doesn’t have a separate part listed for ‘trimming’ as far as I can see.

You'd be welcome to use mine to take a mould from but there are a few thousand miles adding to the difficulty in that one.

#15 Re: Windscreen trim panel part number.
I made one over the weekend. Used plaster of paris bandage (stolen from work) to make the mould and then cast it using 300gm fibreglass mat. Came out better than I expected and fits perfectly. Mould on the left, copy in the middle and original on the right.
Andrew.

#18 Re: Windscreen trim panel part number.
Thanks guys. It actually was easier than expected; the biggest problem I had was getting the resin to go off in 12C weather. Took me probably 2 or 3 hours over a weekend. The plaster of paris bandage is really easy to use although to be fair I have probably put on hundreds of fracture casts so maybe I'm a bit more familiar with the material than the average punter.
The other product I considered was thermoplastic sheeting, either Worbla or Kydex. I can't get Kydex in Australia which is a pity because on paper it looks good. My local casting supplies shop does sell Worbla but their advice was that even though you are supposed to mould it at 90C it can soften enough in a hot car in summer to deform.
A single layer of the 300gm mat was sufficient to provide reasonable rigidity and the cast is only a little bit thicker than the pressed steel.
I have been unable to source one of these trim panels, and the only other alternative was to have one custom made in steel (quoted around $1000). Had I known how how easy it was I would have considered making the upper cantrail covers as well, rather than paying over $1000 for 2 repro ones.
