Aluminium under dash panels change date
#1 Aluminium under dash panels change date
Hi,
Does anybody know what date(chassis number) that the under dash panels (Scuttle Top Castings, in parts manual speak) changed from aluminium to millboard?
Thanks,
Paul

About September 1963 from memory, but I haven't looked it up so may be a tad out.

Thank you both for your input,
I have noticed that there seems to be a wide spectrum of people who say that they have original aluminium panels, some on cars as late as 1966.
As far as I can establish, the part numbers remained the same throughout Series One production and maybe later.
I made some panels out of millboard, and they are quite flimsy and I didn’t like them.
My car did not come with any and I am now thinking of making some in aluminium and just wondered what might have been original to my November 65 car.
Regards,
Paul

My very early 4.2 FHC, built 9/64, had the alloy under-dash panels.

This information is taken from page 78 of the latest Thomas Haddock reference book, and as I thought the change from alloy panels to leather(vinyl came later) took place in September 1963. Prior to that there were two styles of alloy dash, one dot pattern for the early cars and the other like a series of plus signs. No car after September 1963 should have an alloy dash panel, and if it does it was probably changed for appearance by a previous owner.

They are not referring to the alloy facia but the under panels. The ones with the trip reset and clock adjustment fixed through Tony

My S3 and al my S1.(/S2s had millboard panels. Of the S1s, some bad Rexine-covered alloy and several had lost their panels.
My April 66 2+2 came with alloy each side of the column but I can’t prove they were original. The 2+2 under-dash area was substantially different from SWB cars and they used a lot of millboard for the extra glove trays under each side. They were first to use heater footwell diffusers controlled by dash knobs and the first to have a locking dash cubby lid, all of which one could imagine coinciding with a change to pre-finished stamped millboard panels at significant saving of time and money?
