#1 Mysterious holes nearby the fuel pump

Post by Herblay » Tue Feb 04, 2020 3:12 pm

I'm trying to identify what was missing nearby the fuel pump of my LHD FHC, October 62. I've marked one of the four or five holes I see nearby the fuel pump. Any ideas?

I’ve got those on mine too!
I think that some may just need a blanking grommet and one might be for a trim/cable/wiring clip in the footwell - I can’t remember for sure. Next time I’m in the garage, I’ll have a look to see what’s in mine.

Just an fyi to prevent confusion in the future. That is the fuel sediment bowl not the fuel pump. If you develop a problem with fuel delivery you need to look for the fuel pump in the boot.

Yes, apologies for the confusion. BTW, I've been surfing (again) the Factory Fit 3.8 section and I'm not finding what purpose those holes are for.

This photo is from a June 1961 body shell which has just been cleaned back to bare metal and only shows two holes.

Generally, on 3.8 cars the holes in the left side are for the RB310/340 Control box and those on the right side are for the rivets securing the data plate . On 4.2 cars the control box is replaced by the 4tr alternator control

Hi from the first page of Factory Fit 3.8 below.

There are more, you just have to trawl through. Pics are added as and when original cars are found and photographed or when a particular component comes under scrutiny so there isn't any set order. Loads of really useful pics and info though.
As Richard says, one of the holes is certainly for where the metal P clip for the wiring harness in the footwell attaches.

So,
The front one is for a P clip for the harness.

What's the rear for??

Mine has 2 small holes on that vertical surface on the RHS for pop rivets for a small oblong aluminium plate stating compliance with the British standard for seat belt anchorages. But it's a 1967 UK car so that won't help...
I suppose it might have drilled by a PO for some mod?

Hi

This is not definitive as there were IMHO considerable changes throughout early production.

875039. The two pop rivets (seen on early car and held a wire tag on the inside) have 'rusted’ away and the external 'wire' tag has been broken off. The external 'wire’ tags were only present for a shortish period. Note the position of the ‘P' clip changes depending on assembly - compared to the other cars shown.

Note also the triangular aluminium patch pop-riveted to cover the hole on the front of the A post - present about body numbers in the 30-60s (I think so don’t quote me please) until the rubber plugs were introduced.

Image

875039 detail after strip down. From the bottom - front lower hole was a 3/16 bolt holding a 'P' clip, then the two holes with blanking plugs, the two close pop-rivets holding a wire tag inside and a solitary pop rivet next to the broken external wire tag.

Image

875039. RB 310 side showing 'wire' tag and the rivets holding the wiring loom cover. Aluminium patch removed.

Image

This LHD roaster is approximately 50 behind 875039 and has the hole at the rear of the panel.

Image

This pre-production car has both holes but welded up!

Image

Same car showing inside detail and wire tag.

Yes I am sad.
