S1 4.2 FHC Seat Base Refurb.

I am planning to replace the seat base foam and rubber support on my S1 4.2 FHC 1965, but can't see how the base is fixed to bottom seat frame?

The rubber diaphram is attached to the seat base with clips front rear and sides...the foam then sits on top

Many thanks for the reply, the seat foam with seat cover look like they are fixed to the seat metal base, how are they fixed on /removed ?

The foam is glued to the base and the cover is glued to the foam at its center sections...Steve

And the cover is stapled to the seat base which has a chanel filled with a rope like material to staple into.. as can be seen in the photo above...Steve

Sorry one other question, with 4.2 seats the back of the seats can be tipped forward, are the seat backs supposed to lock in the upright position, if so how?, as mine don't lock in the upright position they can be easily tipped forward.

My seats do not have any lever that I can see, the seat back is either up or folded down??, its a Jan 1965 4.2 FHC.

If your '65 is the same as my '65 there isn't really much holding the squab upright, except for body weight.
There should be a metal clip on the l/h side of the base, as in this photo:


These clips don't have a part number and I don't think they are available anywhere.

Then on the l/h hinge arm there is a metal spring hanging down. This is supposed to hook into base's clip and provide a level of resistance. Over time most of them have broken or disappeared.
The part number is BD27383 "Spring, on L.H. Hinge Arms, retaining squab in raised position". I think I managed to get a pair from Richard Smith. No-one else seems to have them.

you can just about see the spring hanging down from the part numbered "4".

Re the tacking trim you staple the seat base covers to, here's a photo showing the "rope"y stuff in its channel at the lower right of the picture.

Do you where I can get the 2 small screws required to fit the spring clip to the seat hinge ?

I'm doing my seats at the moment and have come across several problems on the way.
The coverings and the seat frames in places had been modified, so I had a similar voyage of discovery.

A couple of points to mention: if you are replace the rubber diaphragm, you may find as I did that the spring clips on the rear and sides at the rear are shorter than the originals and if fitted stretch the rubber diaphragm to extreme. I replaced these clips with the originals.




These are the seat back spring clips; I don’t know the size of the screws, I just happened to have some to hand.





I bought the clip that is screwed to the base from Richard Smith.

The seat base covering is only glued to the sponge base in the centre section, The outer part and the sides are not glued.

I've heard that some people use fan belt material as the tacking strip; I used the original.

I hate to be pedantic, but in case anyone is searching for that Spring for the Seat bases, I believe that the correct part number is BD 27838, (not BD 27383 as shown at Post #9).
These are normally available from SNGB.
