#1 Re chroming

Post by Bakergt40 » Wed Jun 24, 2020 9:34 pm

Hi all,
Considering I might remove All the bumpers For re chroming at the end of the season.
If the season gets going that is.
Just how difficult or fiddly is it . Is the fuel tank to be removed.
Thanks
Keith

Assuming you have a 1964 3.8 S1 FHC, the 4 bumpers are held on by bolts which screw into captive nuts welded to the bumpers. There are 2 per bumper at the front and 3 at the rear.

These are accessed from within the bonnet cavity at the front and within the boot at the rear.

So you will need to remove the headlight glasses and the sugar scoops at the front to gain access, and the boot contents and fuel tank at the rear.

This is all a bit of work but at the end of the day not too complex.

You will also need to remove the front motif bar, and the access to the two nuts that hold this is a bit fiddly.

While the tank is out it's worth getting it properly cleaned out and painted. If you are bothered by petrol fumes from the boot, as many FHC owners are, now's a good time to replace all of the fuel filler and drain hoses.

You can also get the headlight surrounds re chromed and replace the screws if necessary.

Pay close attention to the number and orientation of spacers on each of the main bolts that hold each bumper. I tape them together with masking tape which makes reassembly with the correct (6mm) gaps easier.

Replacing the trim rubbers is most easily done by using superglue to stick them to the bumpers prior to offering the bumper up the the car.

This is all going to end up being a couple of day's work your first time, but is worth it if your chrome is letting you car's appearance down.

:yeahthat:

With an interval of a couple of months at the chrome plater's if you use one of the better ones!

Thanks for the info,
My Chrome is acceptable but it’s shows signs of wear and I’m picky so I’ll remove them later
There’s definitely a few hard to get to jobs on the e types,no consideration for future restorations 🤪
When I had the bumpers rechromed on my 59 Cadillac years ago they were easy.

Thanks for info, keep safe everyone

Hi Keith

I'd agree with all the comments except one. You do not need to take out the fuel tank in order to remove the nearside rear bumper. I removed the rear bumpers in January for re-chroming and will be refitting them the next time I get some garage time.
I would recommend ACF Howell for chrome work. They are reasonably priced, do a superb job, great to deal with and not eye wateringly expensive as other companies often mentioned here.

Cheers

I'd be happy if the chromers I contacted could be bothered to even reply.

I sent polite emails including pictures to both CastleChrome and MarqueRestore on May 25th and neither has so far answered.

I am sorry to be intrusive, but how much does it cost to rechrome a bumper in the UK?
