Hi, my engines has been laid to rest finally.
Am I able to use an auto 4.2L Jaguar 420 engine in my 1966 2+2 E-Type and source a manual 2+2 gearbox to make it a nice manual left hooker?
I'm not overly clued up on workings of each engine and the gearbox matching, any help would be greatly appreciated
Jack

Hello Jack.....
sad news, are you sure it's dead. Have you given it the last rites...?
I ask on the basis that there's plenty of companies out there that maybe able to revive it, at a cost.
My CME refurbishment was the wrong side of £8K but wow, you get a lot for your money, I guess it all depends on the status of the parent bodyshell/car and usage but whatever you do, don't chuck it !!

Hi Jack...yes.....you can...you will need the sump from your E type....and a flywheel and bellhouseing for a manual car...and clutch etc.......you cant use the 420 carbs/manifold as you will have problems closeing the bonnet....you do need to notify dvla of an engine change and may well need to have the vehicle inspected. ...Steve

Oh it's not going anywhere! I'm sure it can be saved by an engine wiz but I know it'll cost me, maybe in a few years I'll get it seen to.
I ask about the 420 engine as I have one sat in the garage rebuilt years ago, and I can have it dropped in by a very good mechanic friend for a fraction of rebuilding the original. Whilst its being done I really would like to convert to manual if its possible.
My E-Types a real driver at the moment, I will restore her eventually coinciding with the original engine going back in, but for now will the 420 and a manual 2+2 gearbox work in getting her back on the road?

An XJ gearbox will likely be cheaper and you can use the long top with an auto tunnel for a driver, as the stick will come out where your selector is.
Pity you’re in the UK as I have the parts.

First, what exactly has happened to your engine, as it is virtually unheard of for an XK engine to be beyond redemption ? The second point is that there is a slight ambiguity in the advice given above : the complete engine with manifold which will not fit is a 420G ( i.e. Mark 10 ) engine with 3 carburetters .A 420 engine, which has two carbs, should not foul the bonnet. In any case, you can use the manifold and carbs from your existing original engine on any replacement with a straight port head, including on your 420 unit
