#1 Fixing of the metal channel around the door/window openings

Post by 265bhp » Thu Oct 29, 2020 10:42 pm

Evening all

The shallow U shaped mild steel channel section which is fixed by rivets to the door and quarter light window opening....and which receives the rubber weather trim....to be precise

Should I be using the rivets with the rivet gun held inside the cabin or from the outside....I cannot recall how they were originally

Thanks all
Jonathan

They are riveted from the outside but a lot of people don't actually fit them, preferring just to glue the rubber directly to the bodywork.

Thanks Andrew
I can imagine why folks don’t bother...but as I have prepped them and drilled them I shall continue...!.. they sure would be easier to rivet from inside..but I somehow suspected that wouldn’t be right]

All the best

Hi,
The head of the rivet is flat when you apply it by the outside. The seal can be properly mount.
If you do this by the inside, the ball of the rivet is in the U shap so the seal is impossible to fit.

Hi Jonathan, don't forget that some of the holes are for the self tapping screws that secure the can trail trim inside. ... So don't go and put rivets in all of them.

Hi Jonathan,

It is also worth noting how far the back of the pop rivets stick out at the inside of the car, as they can interfere with the fit of the cant rails.

I had to flatten mine down to get a better fit.

Hi Paul

That was one of my original reasons for asking the question, as I wondered if there were a protrusion would it not be better within the metal channel....and which i would then notch the rubber if it needed it....

However...having now modified my rivet gun so the ends will fit into the channel i shall install as intended and try to use the shortest rivets in each case that i can get away with

Best

Once I fitted my rivets (I had to modify my rivet gun too), I used a blunt cold chisel in the grove on the outside as a dolly and planished the end of the rivet flat(ish) on the inside.

Yup...that what I thought I would have to do
This weekend I managed to drill all the holes for the channels...then cleaned/primed and top coated the channels....so either later in the week or next weekend I shall begin to fix them in place
Appreciate the photos guys...confirms what inhad suspected... :salute:

Jonathan,
you are right, use the rivets with the correct length.
Measure the thickness to be riveted and use the rivet whose maximum capacity is in this depth.
This will give you a little ball in the back.
I sell these rivets and 8 out of 10 customers take too long.

Hi

I fitted all the channels as described above and fitted the seals. Around the rear windows it all works as should but I have had to take the channel back off and stick the rubber on around the doors to get them to shut properly. I thought it was the seals but have tried 3 different sources including COH Baines ( which fit the best ) and have taken the car to 2 different specialists with no luck. I will be interested in how you get on
