#1 RHD S1 3.8 OTS for restoration

Post by Robbiee » Tue Feb 16, 2021 8:14 pm

Hi all
Just wondering
Anyone of you seen an original S1 3.8 OTS RHD for restoration in the last couple of years or have they all either disappeared forever OR been restored?

I see a lot of LHD ones but no R

Well, there were far fewer RHD cars to start with, and the majority presumably now 60 years on have been restored or lost . If one looks on xkedata, a very significant proportion of the rhd cars listed are shown as having been restored

You will be lucky. I remember a RHD 3.8 OTS matching numbers flat floor resto car appearing for auction about 10 years ago and it made a huge amount - you could have bought a couple of ex US cars in good nick for the same money.
Not all cars sold for resto get done though - so I expect a few are being 'sat on'
It will be a Coys auction for them later on probably - have the ISA ready.

There are a large number of RHD cars that have come back from the dead! There was one early RHD car that was clearly detailed on XKEdata as written off by the owner, only to have those details erased, although still available on deleted data, and re appear as a car in restoration. I am sorry to say DVLA are not as clever as they may be when it comes to policing ringers. I know of several cars that are complete fabrications. The fact remains that most UK cars were rotten within 3 years and were either scrapped or written off, the log books were rarely disposed of though. I believe there are far more cars extant today than there were 20 years ago.. More so with roadsters as they really did rot out.

Yes ...it seems that the only cars to trust are either those with a solid detailed history of ownership , photos MOTs, repair /resto documentation OR, failing that, things like body numbers written in inaccessible places and period specific parts eg early tubular drive shafts, early prop shafts etc . Engine number on crank was helpful to me too.
I’m not sure I would automatically trust a chassis data plate or even a front frame chassis number stamp...these are easy to transfer/stamp
I went to great lengths to find these things to confirm the identity of my S1 in restoration at present.
