IRS tie plate removal
#1 IRS tie plate removal
Hello,
I would like to remove the tie plate from the rear suspension cross member. Is there something to consider when unscrewing? The irs is still on the car.
Thank you for your help.
Regards
John

The nuts are not captive. But no issue to remove in situ. The lower control arms are primarily located by the rigid bracket attached to the differential so no worries there.
I removed mine twice before my IRS rebuild, once to straighten and clean and the other time to re-seal the back cover.

I don't think I'd let the weight of the car rest on the wheels while you have the plate off.

Hello Andrew,
I understand. The car is jacked up, the wheels removed and the axle ends supported.

I remove the tie plate to check/top up the diff with its oil. I've also found the greasing the lower wishbone pivots is easier with the tie plate off.
At the same time the plate gets a good clean and the fasteners get brightened. Next year I might even replate them
