#1 Accelerator housing/Brake-clutch housing assembly/installation (LHD)

Post by No Quarter » Mon Jan 15, 2024 12:16 pm

Remember I have not taken this car apart and never worked on an E-Type before. :helpsign:
All parts are blasted and painted and wear parts replaced, so...

1. What goes in first, accelerator housing with steering rack, or brake-clutch housing? Or does it not matter?

2. Accelerator housing, I would install it with steering rack already through hole?

3. My biggest puzzle, and a local guy has kinda tried to explain it to me, but I didn't understand it :-). Just looking at it, I would guess to install pedals and axis (#3) before assembly with #18 plate, and then put it all on car. But how do I ensure that the brake pedal (when at rest) is at the right height from the firewall? Axis #3 has to be exact in the correct angle compared to pedal, and the teeth/splines do not enable movement without pulling the axis #3 out first? Or? If I had taken this car apart, I would (hopefully) have marked the axis and pedal so I could see how to install...
What am I missing? Is there a solid procedure for this? Or is it trial and error? And what's perfect brake pedal height, how is it measured?

4. Clutch pedal, it can be adjusted later when the new master cylinder goes on, right? So not critical at this point?

Any other advice?

No answers, so installed LHD throttle and linkage and steering, went fine. Question 3 and 4 still apply.

And just thought I'd mention I have a wanted post for FHC windshield chrome, used bits are ok

You should be able to assemble the whole thing minus the pedal pads and install it from above.

You can adjust the splined brake pedal with the assembly installed by undoing the pinch bolt and opening the splines with a big screwdriver or a chisel while lying in the footwell.

From (distant) memory, the position of the clutch pedal is controlled by the master cylinder push rod.

The only way you could adjust it is to either alter the rod length or shim the master cylinder.

It's been a while since I installed a 3.8 pedal box but I don't remember having any problems.

Thanks Andrew. I would worry about opening up the splines, that I would break it in two?

It's steel so It's pretty tough; I haven't broken one yet.

Have a trial run with it on the bench.

Now that I have my LHD throttle pedal installed, can anybody tell me where clutch and brake pedal at rest is expected to be compared to throttle pedal? Other cars I've worked on often had them approx 1" nearer the driver at rest, is that also normal in the E? Heel and toe and all that :P

They're usually pretty level.

As you say the accelerator is a bit lower but that is adjustable. You don't want it too low though. After some modifications the accelerator pedal on my MK 2 was maybe 1" lower than the brake. When sliding my foot across to the brake it would catch on the side of the pedal; dangerous.

EDIT sorry the above relates to RHD cars. You "organ pedal" design isn't adjustable, I think.
