#1 Sequence: interior, doors, glass, chrome etc

Post by No Quarter » Sun Apr 07, 2024 9:17 am

As an E-Type rookie I've learned that this car definitely has to be assembled in a certain sequence, or you have to go back and redo stuff. I haven't messed up big time like forgetting the propshaft, so far so good I think. And a few books talk about it. But now I've gotten so far, I "only" need to do interior, doors (3), glass, chrome etc., I'm not sure what the best sequence is.

Currently I'm preparing stuff like the cantrails to give to my upholsterer when BAS items arrive. But then I started to wonder about how they are attached. Long story short, should they be upholstered and installed before the seal retaining channel kit that I already installed (before painting, picture)? If yes, I have to drill out rivets, install cantrails with rivets from the outside and then reinstall retaining channel?? :scratchheadyellow:

I'd like to hear the forum's view on the sequence for the latter parts. All my local E-Type friends have OTS' or much later models so their help is not sufficient. My thoughts were, and please correct me:

1. Do all the interior beige roof
2. When all things controlled inside the dash works, install dash top
3. Windscreen
4. Rear door including opening mechanism
5. Glass in rear door
6. Then most of the red stuff
7. All rubber on the sides
8. Rear side windows (lights as you call them?)
9. Doors, naked
10. Fill doors with handle, chrome frame, glass and opening mechanisms while on the car

So, any concerns about that sequence? I don't mind hard work, once! Hate to redo stuff

As usual, any advice is appreciated

Don’t finalise the rear side windows until you’ve checked the door fit as the angle of the rear quarter light and door windows need to match which might even need repositioning of both to get them fitting nicely all the way up.

Hi Mikael

You may find that you have rivetted the seal retaining channel using all the holes provided, which is what my body guy did. It's not a total loss because all you need to do is drill the rivets out of the holes that are supposed to be used for fixing the cantrail crash pads (using small No.4 screws).

Install the headliner, including the cantrail side curtains (pig of a job) BEFORE you fit the cantrail crash pads. Once you've fitted the crash pads you can install the door seals in the channels.

Also, do not fit the dash top until the crash pads are in and the grab handle fitted. Then fit the windscreen. It all makes things a bit easier.

I know this because I had this very problem. Also, cantrail crash pads were a nightmare to trim. So much so that I gave up and took mine to Aldridge to have done professionally.

As Geoff said, do the door frames and quarterlights hand in hand to ensure best alignment.

Stuart

One more thing, trim the rear door before fitting the glass. The trim folds around the window opening under the rubber seal.

Get yourself a set of taps and dies and clean up all threads before you start assembling things.

Was about to install rear door, and first the BD23347 rubber that comes in two parts (why?). Which way should it go in? And is it glued?

Now, things like that would be quite obvious to me if
-I lived in an area with a FHC near
-Had taken it apart myself
-Had the old rubber
None of those three apply

So I have to ask in general, is there somewhere where I can read interior/windows/doors installation how to? I've looked in the knowledge database, didn't find much. The book "E-Type Jaguar Restoration Manual" by David Barzilay has helped a lot, but he has an OTS, so not much help on some FHC issues
