#1 3.8 / 4.2 Rear License plate & grommet

Post by ysmalkie » Thu Apr 11, 2024 8:02 am

Does anyone know how the rear number plate C18921 looked like?
It's listed as standard equipment for 3.8, later as an optional extra for 4.2

There is a puzzling hole in the middle of the rear license plate place:

What is the purpose of this hole??

I think it's usually covered by a grommet, but I cannot find the PN for this grommet.

I think you’ll find its to gain access to the boot lock mechanism for when the cable snaps …….

Series 1 FHC purchased 40 years ago. Courted my wife in it.
Series 1 2+2 when the kids were small now sold.
Series 1.5 OTS in opalescent maroon, Californian car. My retirement present.

I guess you will not find access to the lock on the FHC ;-)

But, you must be right, Jaguar made just one panel for the FHC & OTS, I guess.

The central rubber plug is C5648 3/4". It's not listed (for that purpose) in the SPC.

The 4 rectangular rubbers Tim pointed out are BD6581.

Thanks for the tip on the license plates - not too useful in Poland :-)

The oblong rubber plug is for the bonnet valance, to cover the slot where the US tilting number plate mechanism fits. All cars where fitted with a rubber plug BD20989 sealing the aperture in the bonnet under-panel which was removed and replaced by grommet C4548 when the tilting number plate assembly was fitted.

The correct rear number plate hole positions are shown is this production line photo:

Thanks David,

I am taking about the hole circled red, rear of the car of course.

This may not be present on early cars though.

BTW, for the front bonnet oblong hole, plug BD20989 & grommet C4548 were too short for me.
The C4548 was good though for the handbrake cable grommet in the tunnel. :-)

The presence of the round hole depends on the production date:

Well,

My car (889348) is a FHC and the hole there is 3/4", not 5/16" - but I guess it's not that big of a difference :-)
