E Type Air Conditioning

#1 E Type Air Conditioning
Hi all,
My 66 S1 4.2 2 + 2 is fitted with air con. Unfortunately there is a leak in the evaporator and I would like to find out who fitted these units; and whether they still exist and may be able to provide a new unit.
The difficulty is that the label on the unit is very indistinct - I think it says the manufacturer is, something like, Dayton. The only other markings are roughly, JAG 001; 12V 56810; and the fitting date (I assume) 12/07/00.
Does anyone have any clues as to what this unit may be?
As it is an original right hand drive car, the evaporator unit is mounted on the left hand side and bolts into captive nuts in the firewall. The evaporator unit has mounted on it what I assume is an original E Type fan.

Photos are of the combined fan and evaporator unit; the hard to decipher label; and, the evaporator box on its own.

Why don't you just call them and ask? Looks like 01203 594916, but you'll be able to see better than I can from 3500 miles away...

Roger : I cannot be certain, but I have a feeling this setup may be similar to one which is used as a retrofit by Classic Motor Cars at Bridgnorth, England . Try an e mail to Nick Goldthorp there who will be able to tell you what system they use . The problem is that as far as I know, no RHD Es were ever produced with aircon by the factory, and thus all RHD systems are bespoke

Checked the label on my upgraded heater motor from 'Clayton' and it is exactly the same format and and layout as your photo even down to the logo in the top left corner so I would suggest you contact them.

The only visible number is a fax one and it is indistinct. Tried to check whether it was still connected but no luck yet.
That sounds like the best option Andy - I'll try Clayton first.
Just a comment: This is the first time I have been involved in a forum of any sort. If the responses I've had are indicative of forums then I've been missing out! Thanks to everyone once again.

I used the URL you provided thanks David and have since emailed them. I'm hoping they will reply when they get in this morning your time. Seems like a terrific method of providing air conditioning for an E Type - essentially nothing inside the car. Any one interested should check out their website as per the URL David provided.

thanks for your comments re the forum. My experience of other motoring forums (pistonheads) is not the same as here. I find the members here are knowledgeable, friendly and polite. You couldn't ask for more!

Hi all!
Success, and much cheaper than I had been envisaging.
Removed the air con evaporator to discover a small hole made by an errant self tapper! So quick braze of the coil and a gas recharge means the air con is super cool - not that it is required at the moment in chilly Melbourne.
Took the opportunity, while the core was out ( which meant removing heater etc) to get the radiator cleaned and tested just to be sure.
The people at Claytons were terrific - couldn't help with an exact replica of the core (which is what I feared might have been needed) but could have supplied a whole new ac unit, which fits in the same place.
They were able to help with the heater hoses etc and have promised to send me a set of the labels that I can stick to my newly refurbished unit.

Resurrecting an old tread, does anyone know why Clayton do not offer the option of its Footwell Mounted System (http://claytonclassics.co.uk/parts-upgr ... uar-e-type) to other E Types apart from the 2+2 and the series 3? I think there is enough room on a normal FHC to lose some inches on the passenger footwell site. Any views on this?

I think the problem is simply size.
The unit takes up 160-170mm of space in the footwell; the 2+2 and 3 have a longer wheelbase so there is more room for the passenger.
If you think you can do without this 170mm of leg room then I can't see why you couldn't use it.
Best to email Clayton to confirm though.

However, they also have much deeper floors, giving a roomier seat position and hence space for AC.
