#1 Wiper rack link arm to motor crank

Post by andrewh » Sat Jul 06, 2013 4:01 pm

I wonder if anyone has dismantled the concentric end, as opposed to the ball joint end of this rod? I have one second hand one with some wear, is this ok? And also one in bits as a result of an over enthusiastic plater. I need to know how it all fits together. Is there a hidden brass boss for instance?

Hi Andrew,

Is this what you mean:

Mine is also looking particularly worn, but I don't really know what they look like new.

Cheers.

Yes indeed it is although rather worryingly I don't recall any of the spring washer and collet plus cap being on mine when i stripped it down! Is your a series 1?

My wear is in the concentric which will manifest in a clonk as the push action of the arm is changed to the pull action no doubt. As its such a tricky thing to change when the car is all up together I rather want to sort this out now. Do you think your cap and spring is original? Need to check my dismantling photos. Any other thoughts on the internal working of the crank end?

Yes, mine is also a '62 series 1. And yes, the cap and spring, I'm sure are original.

However, I can't really help you with any advice, as I am in a similar situation as you with needing to know what a good, non-worn example looks like. What I can do is take a couple more pics so that we can maybe compare what we have. However, I'm flying off to Biston flr a week tomorrow so it will be another week before I can post any pics.

Where abouts are you located?

In Kent near Tenterden. Problem is that you have to de-rivet it to check the inside crank pin. I suspect it is brass and subject to wear. Does it matter when they will not get a lot of use in the rain? Probably not but as they say....if a jobs worth doing its worth doing well! Stay in touch on it. I may remake my broken one in the meanwhile so will report if I get it done soon. Thanks
