#1 Trying to find 191 LUA

Post by minigeff » Sun May 25, 2014 8:34 pm

Hi there guys (and girls?) hope you don't mind, but I'm here to try and find an old friend of the family, a 1962 3.8 S1 E-Type. This used to be my mum's car many moons back and was originally red apparently, but a search on the DVLA's vehicle enquiry page states it's now grey... gunmetal perhaps? According to the MID's website the car is currently insured, so it's still out there somewhere. Does anyone know of it's whereabouts or actually own the car? I'd love to hear from you if you have any info. I've asked on the jaguar forums UK forum (i'm a member there as I just bought my first jag, a ford x-type) and so far I've not had anyone step forward.

Thanks for your time,

Minigeff

Just checked the JDC 'Directory of Vehicles and Owners' and the closest match is a Blue car - 190 LUA (#860529). Interesting that two 3.8 FHC's were registered with sequential registration numbers!

Bringing this search back to life today as I was sent an email by Jeff.

He's searched all over the internet and on different forums (jaguarforum.com where he seems to be an active member) but still found nothing. The car is still not on xkedata either. I'm guessing the DVLA don't give details of current owners out? I've asked the Club representatives to circulate an email to members too.

The DVLA do have a form V888 where you can request details of a vehicle. Cost was £5 ( can you believe it) three years back. You have to have good reason to request so in normal circumstances really only the current keeper can ask. They will then send you copies of all previous changes of ownership etc they have back to about 1980. I suspect that under the data protection act they would not divulge info to a third party but I guess he could call the DVLA and ask.

The DVLA will not disclose information in these circumstances. They will only disclose a car's history to the current keeper, or to a person or organisation who has a legal reason for identifying a vehicle's keeper for law enforcement purposes. The JEC run an occasional "where is it now" feature in the magazine and that is probably the best place to post a query

Guessed that would be the case Christopher. It did say so on the form from memory. If you ARE the registered keeper it is worth a fiver as you might get a mine of information...I certainly did.

Hi there, if you’re still interested in 191LUA I can help. My friend has just bought this e type and although he’s not on this forum I could put you in touch with him. Meanwhile if you google ‘e type at Kilbroney’ you should find a picture of the car
Best wishes

191 LUA is a Leeds issue from June 1964. That could possibly assist with XKEDATA searches??

Didn't the registration system change in 1963 with the introduction of the 7 character suffix letter arrangement?

Stuart

Stuart is right. Seven digit numbers arrived in 1963. So cars registered from 1st Jan 1963 to 31st Dec 1963 had an A suffix. B was 1964, C was 1965. D was 1966 and E Was Jan to July 1967 when the flip over changed to Aug meaning F was Aug 1967 to July 1968 and so on.

191 LUA must be either a 1961 or 1962 issue as far as years go assuming it was originally issued to an E type.

I am afraid that neither Stuart nor Julian is precisely correct, although the major part of it is correct . Some local licensing offices introduced the A suffix in 1963, and others introduced the suffix system with B in 1964. However, there were some licensing offices ( Cheshire was one , because I had SCM 469 which was a 1964 car ) which still had unused registrations of the number/3 letter type , ( or even , as mine was, of the letter/number variety ) and continued to use these up during 1964 . Thus, as already stated, there is no reason why this should not be a 1964 car

Leeds, along with many other registration authorities, didn't use A suffixes and still had plenty of the 'old' series left by Dec 64. B suffix wasn't used either as far as I can tell xxx KUM or LUM appears to be the last series used by Leeds in Dec 64. See this handy link: www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/reg-letters.htm

Just received this from Richard Buck:

"Hi,

One of your members is trying to find E-Type 191 LUA - I owned it for three years.
While I had it, it became the unknown star of the 9600 HP restoration book as it was almost identical and in the same workshop... when some of the photo's were taken they had to use my car because 9600 HP wasn't ready. I sold it about 10 years ago and believe it's still with the same person in Ireland.

For his information it's a 1961 car and it is now gunmetal grey.

Hope that's of use - Richard"
