#1 COMPETITION DEPARTMENT FIT

Post by Heuer » Mon Jul 06, 2015 5:38 pm

Harold Lang contacted me and suggested we try and document the modifications the Competition Department made to various cars from the Lightweights to customer 'special orders'. Harold has kicked things off with the following:

This was one of a pair of identical competition OTS cars ordered by Mr Robert James Duncan but he was killed in the first one before he had taken delivery of 1E 1139 on 1st April 1965. The Comp Dept modifications are fully listed on the original dated invoice from the Distributor in Lurgan:

Harold Lang sent me these. An original 3.8 E-Type Velocity Stack, Jaguar part number XK.4520 similar to the red painted ones in the photos above.

Just shows you how the currently available stacks are the wrong shape for the XK engine. Jaguar knew what they were doing.

A very good set of pictures showing the original "STD" Lightweight features that would have been turned out to customer cars in period.
The picture set loaded in July 2015 has an out of place photo of the front suspension, which I don't think is of the Bob Jane Car.
The give away is the triangular cut out in the upper wishbone, this feature was introduced on the Coombs car first as part of a package of developments, later applied to the Linder Car in 1964, so only two cars originally.
The suspension also has more modern tweaks not shown in the latter pictures.
Bonhams also clearly don't know what a Jaguar Engine number should look like either, the number stamped adjacent to the front timing cover/ Dynamo is a strange format.
The diff breather is unique to Lightweights as well, but that format is usually used for the gearbox.
It will be very interesting to see what the car achieves at the auction.
I very much like the retained wear and tear "patina" as well. Someone should be credited for turning the car out this way.
