Thank you David; advice much appreciated

I'll keep you posted on progress.

If I'm lucky, they'll be 5.5's...

No , Peter. David's photo is correct. Any black ones were simply painted black afterwards. I can recall a conversation with a friend of my father's as a lad. John Cuff raced E-types, and I know had his wheels painted after being delivered to the local dealer in silver. The reason for painting them, Mr Cuff said he liked them better!

Not sure what you are responding to Barry, but I would certainly agree that "de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum" - especially given I'm somewhat colour-blind :-)

Peter

You'll be somewhat relieved to note that I'm sticking with chrome for my main set , as they look lovely against the Carmen Red. I'm still also investigating the competition chrome wires for the rear, once I understand what width they are from the vendor.

I now have a spare set of painted wires sitting in the garage that I'm not quite sure how to proceed with...

185 tyres can be used on 5", 5.5" and 6" wheels although the ride will become firmer as the sidewalls are stretched for the wider wheels. You may need to remove the bump stops to prevent fouling and you also may find the 6" wheel will not fit the spare wheel well. Really depends on the wheel tyre combination but don't modify anything until you have fitted and tested them. If you have to remove the bump stops you really should add bump stops to the shock absorbers to compensate.
David,

If I may resurrect this thread, I am shortly fitting my six inch Borranis (with Michelin XVS 185HR15 tyres) back onto my S1 and have tried asking the Boge distributors this question with no reply forthcoming.

If I have to remove the bump stops, do you have any suggestions as to where I find the replacements to put on the dampers and what part(s) I should be looking for, please?

The Boges came from SNG Barratt but I can't seem to find a reference to that particular part.

Thanks.

As you are modifying the car you will have to source after-market bump stops which are available in a range of sizes and styles e.g.: http://www.energysuspension.com/univers ... strut.html or https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performa ... bump-stops

None are calibrated for the E-Type application so you will just have to make a best guess. One of these should do the job though: https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performa ... bump-stops

You just need something to prevent metal on metal contact at full compression. Try fitting the 6" 185's to see if you really need to hack off the bump stops.

My experience is that long before there is tyre to body fouling due to a lack of bump stops, the exhaust will hit terra firma. YMMV.

It is not the tyre hitting the bodywork that is of concern here it is the shock absorbers reaching the end of their travel. Metal on metal contact will send a shock eave through the car which could cause serious damage, possibly in places you would not expect. Hence tbe number and variation in after market bump stops.

My experience of grounding the exhaust over undulating roads is extensive (!) but this was also down to low ride height, low profile tyres and a big bore exhaust. When it did happen it was quite a sickening jolt and resulted in cracked silencers and flattened exhaust pipes.

Since fitting bump stops, standard exhaust, 185 tyres and returning to factory ride height I have had no such problems.

Unless the shock can be disassembled, any bump stop/rubber will have to be split to fit it over the shaft. I elected to use a stiff rubber that is captured in the conical depression at the top spring flange when the metal dust sleeve is installed (so it can't squish out/off when compressed). The large nylon washer is the bearing surface at the end of the stroke. Better than nothing...

The bump rubber is part # 16/47/19 PUR 650 from RE Suspension in the U.S. It was shortened slightly to fit inside the depression on the shock. http://resuspension.com/ (Page 3 in the bump stop section) The same design is likely available from UK suppliers.
