#1 Boot floor cover plate over rear axle

Post by wynnski » Thu Dec 15, 2016 9:36 am

Hello
I wonder if anyone can help.
I am after the boot floor panel which is effectively an access panel to the top of the rear axle on the early flat floor and drop floor cars. I bought a new one and it is just a flat peice of aluminium and I am not impressed, so now I am looking for an old original one.

Can anyone help?

Adrian

Steve ( and Adrian ) : there are plenty of factory cars which had the access panel , even going as late as my S2, but it seems to have been a random process as there are plenty of cars which do not have the cut out. The proper plate is a rhomboid shape with strengthening pressed areas within it . You can always tell the amateur cutouts as they tend to be rectangular which the factory ones never were

That's the rear panel. He's after the access plate that screws down onto that panel.
I couldn't find a replacement one for my restoration so had to restore my scruffy one. But even with a few tinworm marks it looks better than a flat plate.
Perhaps worth speaking to Hutsons to see if they remanufacture them now or to Richard Smith to see if he has an original.

Mine has the plate...looks factory to me. The access hole is dished and the cover plate of pressed steel with ribs. Held on by a screw on each side. S1 dom May 62. Sadly you can't have my plate. Don't ever recall seeing one for sale on fleabay either. Try the spares day at Stoneleigh in March.

Thank you all.
I cannot get hold of Richard Smith, they never answer their phone. I was hoping I may get a reply from the States later on today or tomorrow.
Hutson do not have any and I doubt Ulrik will make me one as he tends to make parts for his retorations only. It is quite a complicated bit of pressing when you look at it and making a press tool to make it would cost fortune.
I do have some contacts at JLR so I will also have a word with them.
Mean while I am still on the hunt.

Thank you once again
Adrian

Adrian : if the alloy plate you have fits but is lacking the appropriate indentations, I can trace one of mine out and send you a drawing. The alloy should be reasonably easy to beat with a hammer using a wood former

Wouldn't that make you an accessory to an incident of battery?

Hello Christoepher
Thank you for the offer but I think I will hold out in hope of finding an original panel.
