I have a '69 S2 with a very clunky and uncertain shift-particularly from 2nd to 3rd.Occasionally the gear stick seems to lock around the neutral position like the actuator/selection rods aren't lined up.I've tried greasing it all,adjusting the reverse lock spring,fitted the fibre washer and Spring on the horizontal mounting bolt that the gear stick rides on,but it's still not right.
Any suggestions/comments would be welcome but also advice please on whether the top selector mechanism of the manual gearbox is common to other 4.2 Jags ? If so,I'm thinking I could change this mechanism by acquiring a box or the top part of,from a manual XJ6 or similar.
(I don't want to change the whole gearbox coz I understand that would entail engine removal-nightmare !!)
