#1 Hazard lights question

Post by zigzagsky » Tue Jul 18, 2017 8:24 am

On my S2 2+2, if I switch on the hazard indicators the red warning light on the dash flashes once and then stays off even though the actual indicators continue to flash.

Is this correct operation?

TIA. Brian

Don't think that's right. I have a series 2 2+2, and my red light flashes in time with the hazard lights all the time they're on.
By the way, I'm just down the road from you in Fleet, so if you ever need to compare anything with another 2+2, feel free to pop round. Just PM me.

Thanks Malcolm,

I may just take you up on your offer as there are a few things I'm not sure about having only had the car a short while. I'll drop you a PM and maybe we can meet up one evening.

Back to the hazards - thanks for confirming that I appear to have an interesting problem. Looks like I will have to do some investigating. I guess it could be down to a faulty flasher relay but it certainly seemed odd. The actual green indicator lights don't flash either when using the hazards although they are fine during normal 'single sided' operation.

I guess I need to fix it soon as there is an MOT looming at the beginning of September and I am wondering if it might fail on that issue?

Time to get the electrical diagram out...

Mine does it sometimes also - at least not flashing with every hazard flash. Bad bulb connection or earth usually. You can test this by wiring another bulb directly to the relay output (Terminal P on the relay).

Also, swap P and L round. If the light flashes but the indicator doesn't, you know it is the relay output.

Thanks Mark,

I had almost reached the same idea for testing but was still working through my diagrams.

Hopefully it's the relay as chasing bad earths can take ages.

Quick update.

I pulled the hazard relay yesterday and at least one of the connections looked a bit tarnished and sorry for itself. Quick rub with some wire wool and the relay now works properly and the red 'tell tale' flashed every time.

Thanks guys... on to the next issue.
