#1 PAS and Aircon
Hello Everyone,
Just dismantling my US series 2, 2+2 for a full rebuild and had a couple of questions, if anybody would like to give me their opinion please.
My car will be converted to RHD and it's my understanding from this forum that as I will be converting to RHD, the aircon and PAS equipment cannot be reused and is redundant. Is this correct please?
That heavy compressor and 'table' it sits on is a heavy beast!
I am dismantling it all carefully and keeping all the nuts and bolds together (of course!). Everything looks in quite good nick, though a few of the heavy hoses are cracked and looking like they would need replacing.
Also, does this have any implications for my 60A alternator?
Thoughts most welcome!
cheers,
Rich

Neither can be reused.
1. The Fan/Fan Motor assembly of the air conditioning unit will interfere with the Steering Column in the RHD location.
2. Obviously the Pinion Tower and Pinion is on the Left side in a LHD steering rack unit. There is no way that the Pinion Tower can be moved to the Right Side.
I saw it suggested in a Forum, when your same question was asked, that the Steering Rack assembly could simply by inverted so the the Rack Assembly is upside down and the Pinion Tower is on the Right Side of the car. This can be done, but a clown car would result; that is, turn the steering wheel to the Right, the car steers to the Left.
Regards,
Bill

Rich, later S2 cars had 60amp alternators (mine does) so it should work fine for you.
Edited to add: Also the later S2s had two 'fan' belts from two pulleys. One to the water pump, the other to the alternator. Not sure what you'll have and whether you'll have to change bracketry and/or belts.

Thanks Bill and Geoff,
Yes, I likewise saw the 'clown car' post, which Is not a look I'm going to go for, I think
Thanks for your advice and I do see that as a result maybe two pulleys may be be redundant.
Still, I guess someone might be after this kit...
Cheers,
Rich

For what it's worth, this is what they do with the Morris Minor and A H Sprite; a LHD Morris rack is just a RHD A H Sprite rack flipped over, and vice versa; the Morris has the steering arms behind the wheels, and the Sprite in front.angelw wrote: I saw it suggested in a Forum, when your same question was asked, that the Steering Rack assembly could simply by inverted so the the Rack Assembly is upside down and the Pinion Tower is on the Right Side of the car. I also have the complete LHD kit from my car; powered LHD rack, PAS pump, steering column, air-con & all brackets, throttle pedal housing & linkage. If anybody who drives on the wrong side of the road (courtesy of Napoleon) wants any or all of this stuff, drop me a note with an offer.

Why not keep it Hugo? A subsequent owner might want to convert it back to original.

It did occur to me that I might want to bring the Jag over to Florida, but I actually prefer RHD, even when I'm in America. I have a Morris Minor pick-up that I use here, and I rebuilt that as RHD in preference to LHD. And I don't like air-con - managing without it right now in the Florida July heat in my vehicles, although I have conceded and do have it on in the house.
I did think about keeping all the stuff I took off, just in case I ever sell the car, but I already have so much junk cluttering up the place!
Talking of America, and this is completely off-topic but I feel I've just got to tell somebody - I have a beautiful 1960 Chevy Impala convertible that I bought earlier this year. I just pulled the front brakes off and found that it had a snapped wheel stud. I went over to Autozone and they had a stud (for a 1960 car!) on the shelf for $1.99. And a nut for a few cents more.
I'm getting spoiled here - it's going to come as a jolt when I go back to the UK.

Fairplay to you Hugo, I lived in Florida for a few years and I'm not sure I could have coped without aircon! July, August.... just an oven, especially with the humidity!

My dad had a '61 Impala convertible that my brother and I shared when we took our girlfriends out on a date. Definitely a cool car for a high school kid and it's still a cool car today. When I went away to college, Dad sold the Impala and bought a Renault R10. Quite a step down!Hugo wrote:- I have a beautiful 1960 Chevy Impala convertible that I bought earlier this year.
