Timing cover removal with engine in car ?

Is it possible to remove front timing cover while engine is still in car ?
Also Can sump also be removed while still in car without removing reaction plate and torsion bars
All help greatly appreciated
This is on a 1969 series 1 1/2 e type

Hi John...have never done it but have read that its possible to remove the cover....the sticking pointh is the studs at the top that go into the head have to be double nutted to get them out.....this is worth reading re the sump

hi Steve thanks for the repy we have removed all the studs and just waiting for a large socket to remove the crank bolt then hopefully we can get it out
if its possible to remove the cover with engine in car and from what you have said and what is written

Hello,

for the removal of the "front timing cover", the workshop manual says that the cylinder head must be removed.

Now, I offer you a method to do this without removing the cylinder head:
1- First of all, disassemble the oil sump. I just did a tutorial on this subject, on this forum.
2- Remove the water pump, the alternator, the belt tensioner pulley.
3- Remove the 4 studs which connect the cylinder head to the front timing cover, using 2 nuts very tight one on the other. Then, the stud must be loosened using the nut in contact with the cylinder head. This operation is difficult because the studs are really short.
4 - With a wooden block, gently tap on the 2 ears which are located at the top of the front timing cover, by levering at the bottom with a tool inserted between the front timing cover and the engine block. By progressing, mm by mm we manage to remove it, but we must be careful not to damage the cylinder head gasket.

Then, before reassembling, I suggest that you reassemble studs 1 cm longer, to facilitate any future dismantling. For this, you must use the references:
2X C2189 - stud 5/16 UNF-UNC - 47 mm (37 mm for original stud).
2X C24025 - stud 5/16 UNF-UNC -> 57 mm (48 mm for original stud).

On the other hand, with these extended studs, it will be necessary to use a 5/16 UNF die to lengthen the threaded part by approximately 1 cm, so that the thread allows the nut of the 4 studs to be tightened.

Yes it is ,just done it to replace the timing chain tensioner, you need to remove the head then the water pump then bottom pulleys , then you need to lock 2 nuts together and remove the studs that go through the sump then when you have removed the bolts it can be eased forward , there are 2 dowels top right and bottom left to negotiate then wiggle it over the front crank seal , it is tricky but like I say just done it ok
