Bonett not staying up very high
#1 Bonett not staying up very high
My series 1 1/2 e type bonnet is not staaying up very high, i can lift it to full extent but it comes back down
The only thing that appears to hold it up are the sprung hinge supports on both sides
So i bought new springs from SNG fitted them but still not much different goes up about 10 to 2 inches
Any suggestions greatly appreciated, is there a bonnet rod stay?
Thanks in advance John

My bonnet is sensitive to the slope of the road. Downhill or uphill slopes affect the way the bonnet balances, it needs to be pretty flat.

Yes. No lights or bumpers will make a big difference. Dare say all will be well once they are on. If not the springs may be tired...

On my 69 S2, I have a gas damper on the bonnet. never have a problem with it staying up. Was this standard on a '69 car? (2+2)

are you sure that your new springs are not too long? it might be necessary to modify them a bit by folding the ends a bit inside?

Springs are brand new and same length as originals
I think when bumpers and lights are fitted should tip the ballance

I'm not sure if this is a spring issue. I think it may be more related to the adjustment of the actual fit of the hinges. There is quite a bit of scope for adjustment of the fit of the hinges and this many be worth of trying to set in a different position

Malcolm, your gas damper came in during S2 production. Early ones have the S1 springs, then later changed to the damper. Much nicer, IMHO.

The Damper is a very easy fit and i consider it to be a safety upgrade, as it holds the bonnet up very firmly.

Hi John,
I would not worry too much about it until you have everything mounted correctly on the bonnet. Mine too was not being held upright until everything was on, and now it stays up perfectly. As already mentioned, the hardware ahead of the hinge (mainly bumpers and headlights) adds significant weight is is required to counter-balance the bonnet.
Cheers.
