#1 Passenger door won't open

Post by markc555 » Mon Sep 11, 2017 3:54 pm

I locked the passenger door on my '69 FHC from the inside but now I can't open it. I can feel a slight resistance when I operate the lever (inside the car) but the mechanism must be just missing the lock/catch when the lever is operated.

Typically I can't find the key for that door, it's a different lock to the drivers door and ignition, so can't try to lock/unlock the door from outside.

Any advice or tips on how to open the door? :helpsign:

Cheers

Try delicately pressing down on the door card around the area above and to the rear of where the inner door handle is. If everything is still connected, it may be that the arm linking the handle and the mechanism at the door edge has buckled just enough to be out of shape enough to not pull the lever enough.

I beieve it's an MOT failure to not be able to open the door from the inside.

kind regards
Marek

You are right. Doors must be able to be opened from both inside and outside the vehicle. Section 6.2..B1b of the MOT regs.

Thanks Marek, I'll give that a try.

Fortunately the only had (and passed) its MOT last week!

Can anyone suggest someone/somewhere who'd have a bunch of FS9xx keys so that I could try to unlock the door from the outside :questionmarks:

Mark

I googled classic car key replacements and lots came up. This one seemed interesting http://www.thomaslocks.co.uk/classic.htm . Call them they may have one in stock or can recommend someone.

Hi Mark....it dosnt take much to unlock......just try a thin blade.....those small rectangular keyring pen knifes usually unlock 60s car locks..... you are pushing the lever down on the inside to unlock.......Steve

Pretty much any locksmith can make the keys so long as they have access to Wilmot & Breedon blanks and know the three digit number stamped on the key and in the car.

It is quite disheartening to know that almost nothing is secure. I thought I'd lost my garage key and went to the locksmith and told him the brand of my 20 year old garage and the number on the barrel. He cut keys in under five minutes.

He also cracks safes, for a fee.

kind regards
Marek

Hey Marek, the pressing on the door card trick worked  You sir are a certifiable genius... or at least certifiable  :thankyouyellow:

Now to remove the lock barrel to get the Code and order a key
