Always have the engine balanced. Pays dividends when you run it as the car feels really smooth.

Big week. The body is complete, The car is moving back to the Mechanical and Electrical shop to start working on completing the various systems, engine and drivetrain assemblies. The paintwork is lovely, dark and deep -quite incredible, and the smartphone pictures hardly do it justice. Me happy so far.

Rebuild Day 1. Settling in, organizing and so on.

Positioning the shell

Working on the IRS. The diff is now 3.07 vs 3.54 with modern seals.

Today's video by Richard...

Note that the car will now have a heater, which it didn't have as a California car.

The complete story of the IRS:

1. The original unit. Not in bad shape, but decided that it needed a 3.07 diff versus the 3.54. Since it had to come apart anyway, decided to zero the whole assembly.

Image

2. Part of that was going to Koni Shocks, adjustable.

Image

3. Today it's complete, ready to go back on the car with a 3.07 gearing, brembo discs, stainless brakeline etc

The engine has the "tappet guide stake down kit" which mechanically holds the tappet guides in place on the exhaust side.

Image

Also, the original crankshaft still has STD Main bearings and is in great shape.

Image

It is off to the balancer along with the flywheel and a new ring gear to be fitted, along with the connecting rods, new pins, pistons, rings, front crank damper, clutch assembly for matching weights and balancing.

A new ring gear was refitted by precise flywheel machining with an interference fit as there was a high torque starter installed at some point and damaged the original gear some. The builder has replaced the starter with a fully rebuilt original.

The build - Misc details from last week:

Everything is on schedule except for the new Triple SU kit being supplied/manufactured in the UK (Salisbury) by Burlen Ltd.

Further up this thread, we discussed the merits of SU's over Webers, so I went with the common consensus.

Initially talked to the Burlen sales department last year, they quoted Jan 30 2018 as the next batch completion date, so I signed up. They grabbed the money out of the gate, now it's been slipping a month at a time with the latest flexible foggy reasoning to (who knows?) the end of April. I was hoping to initially show the car in the the ABFM at Van Dusen Gardens (Vancouver) mid May, but as a result of the SU delays, not sure it will be sorted enough to do it and place appropriately. The showing includes a drive to Whistler on the sea to sky highway by the entrants. We'll see.

On the Body and frame side of things , the new electrical harness is nearly ready for the Drive Train and Engine to be reacquainted with the car, as well as the hoses, brake lines, pedal assemblies, accumulator, header tank and so on.

Someone asked me the other day how did they replace the ring gear, as it was originally machined directly on the flywheel.. Here is a pic of the fix. The machine shop milled the old teeth off to the appropriate interference diameter to suit the new ring gear, which was carefully heated just enough not to lose any temper when fit over the milled flywheel. Once done, it was part of the dynamic balance with the crankshaft, pistons, rods, pins, bearings, etc. mentioned up this thread. Here it is as it went back on the crank. The vice grips aren't holding it on, just there to make it easier to torque the bolts....

Getting ready to reacquaint the restored drivetrain back in the car...

A short video of where we are

Some stills for those who like detail ~

Improved clutch throw-out bearing to replace the garden variety carbon version on the right:

Closeup of the CSI electronic Ignition. With the distributor cap on, it looks more or less original:

Original correct starter to replace the high torque version that was in the car previously:

Looks great.

Why dont you just run it in on Strombergs to run it in, then swap over to the SUs when they arrive. It would only take a couple of hours to swap them over.

I'm looking at several options. One is to borrow a set of SU's and manifold from another restoration that is scheduled later as being the most straightforward, since the manifold plumbing and air intake system to the carbs will be the same.

Under the faint hope clause, I spoke with Burlen on Tuesday this week and 'they' thought that the order should be done in the next week or so. Hope springs eternal.

A nice barn find by Richard Owen. He did a test fit, aligns great, drops right into the pins, and the windows are snug when rolled up. Onward.
